Why join Harvard Medical School?
Harvard Medical School's mission is to nurture a diverse, inclusive community dedicated to alleviating suffering and improving health and well-being for all through excellence in teaching and learning, discovery and scholarship, and service and leadership.
You’ll be at the heart of biomedical discovery, education, and innovation, working alongside world-renowned faculty and a community dedicated to improving human health. This is more than a job - it’s an opportunity to shape the future of medicine.
Job Description
The Greenberg lab at Harvard Medical School examines how neuronal activity induced by sensory experience shapes the maturation and plasticity of the nervous system. Neuronal activity triggers a cascade of molecular signaling events in neurons, including modifications to the epigenome, transcriptome, and proteome, which promote long-lasting effects on the physiology and connectivity of neuronal networks. Our lab uses a combination of mouse genetics, human and primate stem cell-derived neuron models, biochemistry and sequencing technologies to uncover new mechanisms controlling these signaling events and to explore their significance during development, evolution, and in diseases of the nervous system.
Specifically, we are seeking assistance for projects
Uncovering human- and primate-specific aspects of the activity-dependent signaling pathway to understand cognitive evolution.
Studying the activity-dependent mechanisms underlying human diseases, specifically autism spectrum disorders.
In this position you will have the opportunity to gain expertise in the following areas:
Cutting-edge molecular biology techniques.
Maintenance and neuronal differentiation of human embryonic stem cells.
Genomic assays to characterize chromatin and RNA dynamics in neurons.
Bioinformatic analysis of sequencing datasets.
We are looking to hire a curious, motivated, highly organized research assistant seeking experience in molecular neuroscience techniques. You will be directly mentored by a postdoctoral fellow who is also a pediatric neurologist, as well as a PhD. student, providing exposure and advice for multiple career tracks. This position is ideally suited for individuals seeking to launch a career in research science or medicine.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
College background or equivalent work experience, preferably in a related discipline.
At least one-year related work experience (relevant course work may count towards experience).
Additional Qualifications and Skills:
Experience working with human pluripotent stem cells or other cell culture models preferred.
Preference will be given to candidates that can commit for two years. Prior research experience is desirable, though not essential.
Demonstrated abilities in basic laboratory techniques helpful, but not required.
Exposure to applicable computer technologies, including specific software applications, may be required.
Appropriate communications skills required. May be required to lift, move and transport related laboratory equipment.
May be required to work with a variety of hazardous materials.
While prior laboratory experience is helpful, most important is a candidate with curiosity, work ethic, organization, the ability to learn new techniques, and an excellent track record in college. This is an ideal position for a recent college graduate interested in preparing for graduate or medical school. Members from groups underrepresented in STEM are especially encouraged to apply.
