Breck Overview
Breck School is a preschool through twelve, coeducational college preparatory, Episcopal day school located in Golden Valley, Minnesota, with a national reputation for excellence and achievement in academics, athletics, and the arts. Position Overview
Breck’s Middle School spans grades 5-8 and has roughly 380 students and 45 faculty and staff. The role of the Middle School Counselor is to provide direct and indirect counseling services to students, faculty, and parents in support of student growth and development. The counselor serves in a collaborative role with the Middle School administrative team, the Student Support Team (SST), and Middle School grade-level teams.
Please note, this is a one year contract position only as it is covering a sabbatical.
Responsibilities
Direct Student & Family Support
Individual Counseling: Provide confidential individual counseling sessions to students and families to address social, emotional, and academic concerns.
Group Facilitation: Organize and lead small groups tailored to specific needs, including social skills, friendship dynamics, family transitions, conflict resolution, grief/loss, and substance awareness.
Guidance Curriculum: Deliver developmental guidance lessons across grade levels and teach one assigned class within the middle school curriculum.
Crisis Intervention: Provide immediate support and assist in managing crisis situations as they arise.
Collaboration & Consultation
Administrative Partnership: Collaborate closely with the Middle School Director and Deans to support their work with students and families.
Consultation Services: Serve as a resource for faculty, administration, and parents regarding adolescent development and behavioral health.
Student Support Team: Serve as an active, contributing member of the Student Support Team.
Referral Network: Provide families with vetted referrals to outside agencies and mental health professionals when specialized care is required.
Community Leadership
Committee Leadership: Lead the "Be a Mustang" Committee to champion a positive community culture and character development.
Parent Education: Facilitate and participate in programs and workshops designed to educate parents on relevant adolescent topics.
Professional Engagement: Attend all required meetings and professional development sessions.
Teach: In addition to the counselor responsibilities, this person will teach one class in the Middle School
Administrative Duties
Record Keeping: Maintain accurate and highly confidential student files in accordance with legal and ethical standards.
Flexibility: Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall health and safety of the school community.
Education and/or Experience
Minimum five years school counseling experience
Bachelor's degree in counseling, social work and/or psychology, Master's in a related field is preferred
Experience working in a school
Knowledge of early adolescent development
Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving experience
Eagerness to work on a highly collaborative team of student-centered leaders
