SUMMARY
SUNY Brockport is accepting applications for two Academic Advisors. Reporting to a Senior Academic Advisor in the Academic Success Center (ASC), the Academic Advisor works with current and prospective students to help them complete their degree requirements through one-on-one and group advising, coaching, mentoring, and referrals. The role requires accurately interpreting transcripts, degree audits, academic program requirements, institutional policies, and state and federal financial aid regulations to guide student academic planning and progression. As a collaborative member of the ASC team, the Academic Advisor contributes to student success initiatives within a data-informed environment focused on strategic decision-making and prioritization. They will also partner with ASC colleagues, faculty, departmental advisors, and department chairs to implement timely interventions that support retention and create clear pathways to graduation.
JOB FUNCTIONS
Essential Functions:
Provides academic advisement for current and prospective students, including appropriate referrals within the ASC and to campus partners such as health services, counseling, and career services.
Coordinates departmental tasks, as appropriate, to support student retention and academic progress.
Maintains effective working relationships with faculty academic advisors, department chairs, and associate deans to assist students with successful degree completion.
Presents workshops to current and prospective students.
Serves on ASC committees and work groups to promote student retention and degree completion through data review and by providing input on prioritization of time and activities that support student success.
Non-Essential Functions:
Serves on committees as needed.
REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree by time of appointment from a college or university accredited by a US Department of Education or an internationally recognized college or university
Experience in academic advising, counseling, or student services within a higher education setting
Experience working with a management information system
Effective interpersonal skills to work with faculty, staff and students
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree by time of appointment from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized college or university
Bilingual in Spanish
Experience working with Slate or similar retention software tool
