The Career Advisor will assist students in career exploration via 1:1 appointments in-person, by phone, or via MS Teams, assist with the creation and delivery of classroom presentations and workshops, and lead efforts to develop resources, newsletters, career skills learning modules, and marketing materials for students. This position will serve all students seeking career counseling assistance, including choosing a major, identifying internships and jobs, crafting resumes and cover letters, and practicing interviewing for available positions, and will help with coordination of employer events. This is a 12-month position with occasional evening and weekend responsibilities.
Responsibilities (Include but are not limited to)
1:1 Career Advising: Provide students and alumni individual assistance in defining career options, articulating career competencies gained through curricular, extracurricular, and work experience, and identifying and applying to internships and jobs.
Group Workshops and Presentations: Develop, coordinate, and facilitate training and skill development workshops and classroom presentations to include resume preparation, job-search strategies, interview skills, and experiential learning preparation and articulation.
Resource Development: Assist the Director in creation of job search information relevant to USJ majors and targeted industries.
Marketing: Assists with the planning and promotion of career services events to students, alumni, faculty, and employers through wide-array of marketing efforts; Compiles and distributes information weekly on full-time employment, internships, and part-time employment via Handshake newsletters to all interested students and alumni.
Employer Events: Assists with scheduling and coordinating employer panels and information sessions, on-campus interviews, and career fairs; Assists with internship for credit program including all paperwork.
Other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements:
Education & Experience:
Bachelor's Degree
1 year experience in higher education (Career Development or Academic support preferred),
Other Qualifications:
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Able to function independently while operating effectively within a team environment
Possess solid general computer skills, including ability to work in a Windows environment. Proficiency with MS Office Suite, Internet, and other programs as needed (e.g., mail merge, data base management). Familiarity with specific applications used by the University/Department a plus.
Excellent oral and written skills and ability to communicate comfortably with students, colleagues, and external constituents
Flexible and able to multi-task
Cultural competency to work with diverse student and/or employee population.
Exhibits a high level of professionalism, leadership, creative problem solving, diplomacy, negotiation and sales skills, and the ability to manage complex projects with minimal supervision
Professional, courteous demeanor and appearance; ability to work professionally with students, faculty, staff and administration and represent the University professionally to the public
