The College of Communication Arts & Sciences at Michigan State University seeks an entrepreneurial director of esports (Outreach Specialist) to manage our growing portfolio of esports teams and groups and engage external audiences in this area. The position calls for a strategic planner who can execute without supervision, while being able to collaborate and incorporate input. A good understanding of our academic programs related to esports (game design, sports journalism, digital storytelling, etc.) and of the esports industries is needed to effectively shape and manage the direction of the esports program. Currently, our esports program is student-driven, consisting of 500 active students across a variety of popular titles. We coordinate activities and events with other colleges and universities throughout the country.
The Director of Esports is responsible for the daily operations and administrative oversight of the program in support of all student activity and programming related to Esports, including budget, personnel, risk management, and team practice and competitive activities. The position also supports broader esports initiative on campus and will have primary responsibility for the Esports lab at MSU. Major events include esports competitions, tournaments, conferences and speaker series. Experience with event planning and marketing, corporate fundraising and budgeting is desired. This position will work with coaches, advisors, and campus partners to develop a healthy community of gamers and to reinforce our values of equity and inclusion in the gaming community. This position will also represent the program across campus and the broader academic and gaming communities. This position requires the ability to work a flexible schedule. The Esports Program provides an opportunity for students to get involved and encourages community, competition and career skill building through its various programs and services. Good communication skills are also essential. Candidates are expected to be familiar with the use of online content management systems and social media. This is a fixed-term, renewable appointment.

One year of experience with relevant technology in esports such as gaming computers, broadcasting equipment, etc.
One year of experience in personnel management including supervision, evaluation, and development of students, professional staff, or equivalent training/education.

Ability to work a flexible schedule (some evenings/weekends) and travel as needed.
Successful record of working collaboratively with colleagues across constituency groups (faculty and staff).
