This position will be hired at the Staff Research Associate 1 or Staff Research Associate 2 level depending on the experience of the selected candidate.

Under the supervision of the PI, incumbent will perform specialized experimental techniques in Molecular Biology, Cell Culture, and a variety of other general laboratory experiments. Duties will include handling and processing of laboratory specimens, using techniques including microsatellite assays, electrophoresis, Western blotting, DNA and RNA extraction, immunohistochemistry, and transfection experiments, including those involved in cell culture, clonogenic assays, kinase assays and expression of green fluorescent protein constructs. Position is also responsible for data entry and analysis, and general lab duties as assigned.
Install, operate and maintain laboratory and field instruments and specialized equipment including fluorescent microscopes, DNA analyzers, -80C freezers, etc. Complete and maintain data properly, including lab notebooks, cell lines, and bacterial strains and animal records. Perform data calculations and analysis from experimental results and use appropriate computer software. Order laboratory supplies and handle biohazardous materials. Inventory and dispose of biohazardous wastes.
Theoretical knowledge of a life science such as typically acquired by a Bachelor's Degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, or related field.
Experience and ability to perform standard repetitive techniques including: microsatellite assays, electrophoresis, Western blotting, DNA and RNA extraction, immunohistochemistry, transfection experiments, including those involved in cell culture, clonogenic assays, kinase assays and expression of green fluorescent protein constructs.
Proven ability to read, interpret and apply protocols in conducting research. Ability in following step wise experimental protocols. Skill to troubleshoot adaptations of experimental protocols.
Demonstrated skill in the operation and maintenance of various lab equipment such as DNA and protein apparati.
Knowledge to read and use Material Safety Data Sheet's. Knowledge of UCSD Environmental Health and Safety requirements and the ability to write with correct syntax and grammar and to clearly communicate ideas and protocols in writing to EH&S. Experienced in working and maintaining a sterile environment.
Strong communication skills (verbal and written) needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment, as well as effectively and accurately document research procedures. Ability to read, comprehend and discuss research materials. Ability to assist in the writing of papers for publication, research proposals.
Proficient experience with the operation of a personal computer and software application, such as Access, MS Word and Excel. Knowledge to work with and learn new software for analysis.
Effective and diplomatic oral and written communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work with a variety of personnel from different laboratories and instruct in optimal procedures for assays.
Knowledge sufficient to coordinate studies with other departments and the lab. Skill to plan and organize work assignments in an efficient and productive manner.
Manual dexterity and legible handwriting. Ability assist with general lab maintenance, including cleaning and restocking supplies and manage a regular schedule in the lab.
Knowledge of biosafety techniques and practices. Experience to work with chemical and biological hazards and to recognize safety problems.
Demonstrated ability to follow established Safety and Biohazardous Material Guidelines.
Willingness and ability to work with rodents and/or other lab animals and/or infected samples, if required.
Demonstrated experience in Dermatologic research.
Demonstrated experience with DNA extraction from skin swabs.
