General Purpose: Under the supervision of the Youth Programs and Events Supervisor, and the Youth Camp Program Assistant, Youth Camp Counselors will teach and supervise activities for youth ages 6-17 in an aquatic environment. Counselors are responsible for all aspects of youth programs operations including, but not limited to: supervising and ensuring the safety of campers, teaching and operating watersports activities, setting up and cleaning up equipment, and providing outstanding customer service. Youth program activities occur both on land and on/in the water. The primary work will occur during summer, however, youth programming occurs in spring and fall seasons as well.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary Functions
Teach and conduct watersports activities for campers ages 6-17
Supervise and ensure the safety of campers and camp activities
Foster a welcoming and encouraging environment for all camp participants
Ensures high quality and amazing experiences
Daily set-up and clean-up of required equipment
Maintain attendance records
Supervise equipment use during camp activities
Create an enriching environment that focuses on youth development
Other duties as assigned

Assures that customer needs are addressed and met to the highest standards
Understands their role in providing high quality MBAC experiences to all participants
Foster an age-appropriate student-driven learning environment, which promotes character development and in camper growth.
Work collaboratively with other departments to support daily operations and clean up
Safety
Ensures all operations are conducted with safety of staff and customers as first priority, and in accordance with the Injury and Illness Prevention Plan and other safety policies
Ensures adequate supervision of participants at all times and under all conditions
Ensures camp activities are appropriate and meet MBAC safety standards
Adheres to Associated Students' Code of Safe Practices
Adheres to the MBAC Abuse Prevention Policy and communicates issues or concerns promptly
Reports accidents to supervisor and reviews changes required to avoid reoccurrence. Ensures completion proper documentation is completed for each accident (employee and/or non-employee) and forwards to supervisor
Reports maintenance problems and/or broken and unsafe equipment to the appropriate party immediately
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum & Preferred Requirements
Must be at least 18 years old at the time of hire
Education:
High School Diploma/GED
Must be at least 18 years of age
Priority given to current SDSU and UCSD students
One year of college coursework completion preferred
Experience:
Experience working with children ages 6-17 preferred
Experience or expertise in one or more of the following required: wakeboarding, waterskiing, wakesurfing, surfing, stand up paddling, kayaking, sailing, marine science, or youth instruction
Prior teaching or supervisory experience with youth ages 6-17 preferred
Bilingual skills in Spanish, French, or Mandarin are highly desirable
Candidates with experience working with individuals with disabilities or with underserved populations are highly desired
License & Certifications:
Red Cross Waterfront Lifeguarding (must be obtained within the first month of employment - Available at MBAC)
Must complete a sailing course or pass MBAC Sailing Qualification
FBI, DOJ, and LiveScan fingerprint clearance and third party background check
Current valid driver's license
Trainings:
Anti-Harassment Training (Must be completed within 30 days of hire)
Workplace Violence Prevention Plan Training (Must be completed within 30 days of hire)
Gender Awareness Training (Must be completed within 30 days of hire)
MBAC All Staff Training

Must have sincere interest in working and connecting with campers ages 6-17
Must possess experience and skill in one of the following areas: wakeboarding, waterskiing, wakesurfing, surfing, kayaking, stand up paddling, sailing, marine science, or working with kids 6-17.
Must be able to follow oral and written directions and follow projects through to completion
Must have good interpersonal skills and a desire to provide excellent customer service
Must have strong English language skills and the ability to read, write, and verbally communicate at a level appropriate to the duties of the position
SCHEDULE & WORKING CONDITIONS
This is a part-time position. Applicants must be available to work June through August. Flexibility and willingness to work long hours including weekends with high demand during summer.

Physical requirements include but are not limited to: swimming, swimming in rough and deep water, walking, running, walking or running over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying loads. Must be able to swim at least 550 yards, dive at least 10 feet deep, swim with a 10 pound object for at least 20 yards, and tread water for at least 2 minutes. Must be able to watch and supervise groups of students in the ocean while coaching technique and supervising safety. Must be able to recognize and respond to emergencies and prevent injuries or drowning.
