The ability to quickly take in and process sensory information in order to make decisions and guide our actions is critical to many everyday tasks. Speed of processing varies between individuals and as a function of age, but the brain mechanisms involved remain a matter of debate. Critically, abnormal processing speed is implicated in multiple disorders with high prevalence in the UAE, including autism spectrum disorder, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and obesity. The Melcher Lab (Perception and Active Cognition Lab: https://nyuad.nyu.edu/en/research/faculty-labs-and-projects/perception-and-active-cognition-lab.html) has developed a number of behavioral and neuroimaging measures of mental processing speed. The focus of this project is to move forward in the understanding of neural correlates of speed of processing and their applications to specific clinical groups here in the UAE. This project takes advantage of the world class neuroimaging facilities at NYUAD, including the only research-dedicated MRI scanner and MEG system in the region, as well as our strong ties to local health providers and hospitals.
Responsibilities of the position
To assist in the recruitment and follow-up of participants
To play a key role in the behavioral and neuroimaging studies, from planning to data collection to data analysis
To collaborate in the dissemination of the findings through peer reviewed scientific journal articles and local events
In addition to conducting her/his own research on speed of processing, the candidate will also support the research of post-doctoral associates and others already working in the lab. In addition, the candidate has the opportunity to develop her/his own independent research after the first year, contingent on discussions and approval from Prof. Melcher.
