Episcopal Day School is seeking a middle school Spanish teacher and student advisor for the 2024-25 school year. This educational leader will bring an energy and passion for teaching with a commitment to fulfilling our school’s mission within our community of students and families. Part of a teaching team, this teacher will cultivate positive relationships with students and create engaging learning experiences that challenge and support students.
We value a communicative, content-based approach to language learning while recognizing the need for students to succeed in traditional high school Spanish courses. We are looking for a teacher who has a passion for this approach and for furthering the global competencies of our students.
This teacher will advise and advocate for a small group of mixed-age students, implementing advisory lessons based on Developmental Designs for MS.
This is a full-time, ten-month faculty position reporting to the Middle School Division Head.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
Plan and implement lessons for active student learning; use a variety of tools to assess student progress toward learning goals, making necessary instructional adjustments
Engage students in learning and communicating (verbally and in writing) in Spanish while deepening their appreciation for cultures other than their own
Support the individual needs of children while managing whole group experiences
Implement effective and respectful classroom management strategies to maintain a positive classroom environment conducive to learning
Participate in advisory planning, encouraging growth toward “responsible independence”
Collaborate with colleagues to enhance the entire middle school experience for students
Communicate positively and proactively with parents and guardians
Fulfill obligations for student supervision outside the classroom and all professional responsibilities for academic reporting
Participate in professional growth opportunities
PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND QUALITIES
Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Spanish language education or related
Native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English
Teaching experience in the middle school classroom; genuine understanding of and appreciation for middle grades children and their development
Familiarity with the American Council on Teaching Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and I Can Statements
Commitment to continuous professional learning and implementation of chosen programs
The ability to meet varied responsibilities with positivity and flexibility
Familiar with educational technology; able to guide and direct implementation of technology as a tool for teaching, learning, and student practice
