Break Through Tech works at the intersection of academia and industry to propel more underrepresented women into higher education and careers in tech -- with a particular emphasis on Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and first- generation college going women and non-binary students.
Hosted by Cornell Tech, Break Through Tech AI is the new program from Break Through Tech on a mission to credential and fast-track undergraduate women into careers in the fastest-growing areas of tech: data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. Developed with industry leaders, the Break Through Tech AI Program includes three high-level components that are considered critical for increasing the competitiveness and marketability of students pursuing AI/ML engineering roles: (1) skills-based training, (2) industry-relevant portfolios, and (3) mentorship, career coaching, and job placement support. Over the next four years, the Break Through Tech AI Program will expand nationwide to foster a diverse next generation of AI leaders who will build AI technologies that are fairer and more representative of our society.
Cornell Tech seeks a Recruitment and Placement Coordinator to support the recruitment, retention, and job placement of each cohort of Break Through Tech AI Program participants. Each year, you will recruit and select Break Through Tech AI Program participants from colleges and universities throughout the New York region. You will also recruit Teaching Assistants to support the operations of the 8-week summer ML Foundations course, including identification of Break Through Tech AI Program alumni to "pay it forward" in this capacity. In addition, the Recruitment and Placement Coordinator will be responsible for assisting the Break Through Tech AI NYC Career Services Lead to match Break Through Tech AI Program participants to relevant internships and jobs, and track the data to measure progress-to-goal so that students achieve transformational career outcomes. By serving as the primary point of contact to students, the Recruitment and Placement Coordinator will play an essential role in reinforcing the appropriate expectations, tone, and student community that will enable participants to be their authentic selves and persist throughout the 18-month program. The Recruitment and Placement Coordinator will report into the Director of Host Site Program and support regional colleagues as required by role responsibilities.
The Recruitment and Placement Coordinator must have strong organizational skills and significant experience in both relationship management and program execution, with the ability to set priorities and coordinate ongoing activities in parallel, manage competing demands, and provide timely responses to urgent issues. The ideal candidate has a flexible, entrepreneurial spirit, thrives in a startup environment, has the ability to connect academic culture and curriculum to real-world digital culture, and excels in development and management of both personal and corporate partnerships.
This is a full-time, benefits-eligible 4-year term position with the possibility of renewal. This position requires occasional work on evenings and weekends, particularly during the academic year. The responsibilities may be completed primarily remotely during the initial employment period and would be expected to work on location on our Cornell Tech NYC campus when instruction resumes in person.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
(1) Plan and execute recruitment activities for the Break Through Tech AI Program within the New York City region (40%)
- Develop strategy and tactics to effectively recruit 250 students and 25 Teaching Assistants a year into the Break Through Tech AI program.
- Adapt recruitment materials for local context and coordinate and facilitate recruitment presentations and events.
- Design and oversee alumni ambassador program to support recruitment outcomes within the New York region.
- Analyze recruitment data weekly to inform recruiting strategy.
- Support cultivation and management of college partnerships and K-12 relationships including research, meeting preparation, data tracking, and communications.
- Facilitate application review and selection process to drive cohort enrollment.
- Develop, document, and operate tools and systems to coordinate continually improve efficiency and impact of student recruitment activities.
(2) Support student internship and job placement activities for the Break Through Tech AI Program within the New York City region (30%)
- Curate lists of strong internship and job opportunities that will support Break Through Tech AI Program participants achieve strong career outcomes.
- Manage targeted outreach to participants to help match students to opportunities, based on shared interest, fit, and skill sets.
- Partner with the Career Services Lead to measure progress-to-goals tracking/reporting for student internship/job attainment. Maintain consistent data integrity of data collected via student surveys.
(3) Manage ongoing program communication and student engagement. (30%)
- Develop strategy and tactics to manage student communications from point of enrollment through program completion over an 18-month time period, including program onboarding, summer course logistics, and in-person Studio and/or Career Services programming.
- Oversee discussion groups, message threads, and other online, virtual communication between students. Handle initial questions, concerns, and/or escalations from students, mentors, and/or Company Advisors.
- Balance empathy and high expectations for students to foster a supportive community amongst Break Through Tech AI Program participants.
- Maintain high engagement with enrolled students, as to ensure attrition is minimized.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree with 3-5 years of experience or an equivalent combination.
- Passion for diversity in tech, education, and social impact.
- Work in either an academic or corporate setting coordinating or managing student services, event planning, program coordination, or recruitment.
- Must have strong organizational and project management skills with demonstrated experience meeting milestones and deadlines over a sustained period of time.
- Must have strong facilitation and public-speaking skills.
- Has a demonstrated track record of using data and metrics to drive decisions and measure performance; has a strong attention to detail and demonstrates utmost data integrity.
- Is comfortable navigating ambiguity, and is highly flexible and adaptable in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
- Ability to communicate with, work effectively with, and maintain a positive rapport with students, professors and corporate leaders alike.
- Strong interpersonal skills and relationship building qualities are essential in order to expand corporate engagement.
- Must be able to take a leadership role as public spokesperson for the Break Through Tech AI Program in the local market.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's degree with 3-5 years of experience or an equivalent combination
- Additional relevant work experience beyond 5 years.
- Experience with Salesforce or equivalent CRM tool.
