Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens, LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York (CUNY). LaGuardia offers more than sixty associate degree programs and more than fifty workforce training, ESOL, GED, and pre-college programs. In 2023, LaGuardia served approximately 24,000 students. More than one-third of LaGuardia?s degree-seeking students are born outside the United States; they come from 136 countries and speak 43 heritage languages. Sixty percent are first-generation college students.
Virtually all LaGuardia students are ethnic minorities (89 percent), 58 percent are women, 27 percent are over the age of 25. Forty-six percent of associate degree students are Hispanic. Upon graduation most students transfer to four-year colleges, typically in CUNY, to complete their baccalaureate degrees. Graduates of career programs such as Nursing, Computer Technology, and Veterinary Technology enter the workforce. The Senior Academic Advisor reports to the Associate Director for Student Advising Services. The Senior Academic Advisor will:
Provide individualized, developmentally appropriate academic advising to new, continuing, and returning students.
Assist students in selecting appropriate courses each term based on degree requirements, career goals, transfer plans, placement scores, and academic standing.
Collaborate with faculty and academic departments to ensure accurate interpretation of college policies, degree pathways, prerequisites, and course sequencing.
Support students in developing long-term academic plans that align with their educational, career, and transfer goals.
Leverage academic advising tools and technologies such as Navigate, DegreeWorks, and CUNYfirst to meticulously review and maintain accurate tracking of student progress and data.
Monitor student academic progress, identify potential barriers to success, and initiate proactive outreach when students are off-track.
Track progress of students on probation and implement strategies to improve retention and academic performance.
Assist students in continually monitoring and evaluating their education progress by reviewing academic audits, providing support services referrals and information on college policies
Develop, present and assess professional development and training workshops for students, faculty, and staff.
May be called upon to serve on campus committees as appropriate and manage part-time and support staff in the absence of the Director or Associate Director of Advising.
Evening and occasional weekends required.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree and four years' related experience required.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
Master?s degree in appropriate discipline (e.g., higher education, counseling, guidance, social work, or psychology) preferred
Experience working with first-generation, low-income, and/or historically underserved student populations.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team, within the department and with faculty and administrators
Strong organization, project management, communication, and facilitation skills
Ability to maintain accurate and detailed records of student activities
Computer skills, particularly Microsoft Office 365 and aptitude to learn new systems as needed, such as DegreeWorks, Navigate and PeopleSoft.

Provides information to students regarding student support services, college policies and program procedures and guidelines
Facilitates workshops; assists with other department activities such as course scheduling

May supervise extramural activities, such as internships and community service; may assist with accreditation efforts as needed
May provide career and transfer services and/or specialized program counseling
May supervise junior advising and/or clerical staff
