The State University of New York at Fredonia seeks nominations and applications for a strategic and visionary leader with experience in higher education to serve as Dean of the College of Education, Health Sciences, and Human Services. The College is expanding its majors and offerings, and the incoming Dean will need to provide leadership in the areas of new programs and online growth.
The Dean will provide oversight for the College's accredited undergraduate and graduate programs in teacher certification, and ASHA accredited programs in Speech-Language Pathology. The incoming Dean will help grow and secure the campus' proposed Clinical Mental Health Counseling program as well as an RN to BSN in Nursing. Accreditation will be sought for both of these programs from professional organizations. The Dean will also provide oversight for the College's Office of Student Services and Office of Field Experiences, as well as the Youngerman Center for Communication Disorders.
SUNY Fredonia is a member in good standing with the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP) and is working toward accreditation of its educator preparation programs under the AAQEP standards with an anticipated Quality Assurance Review in Spring 2026.
Fredonia is in the midst of a transformation, with a focus on self-examination and reimagination. Therefore, the Dean will help the institution navigate the shifting landscape of higher education and chart new territory by experimenting with new ideas and approaches. Essentially, only those looking to generate change, take risks, and invent new opportunities should apply.
Reporting to the Executive Vice President and Provost, the Dean serves as an advocate for the College's 70 faculty and staff, and approximately 500 undergraduate and graduate students. The Dean will create and lead the strategies to grow the College's enrollment, strengthen retention, promote fundraising and alumni relations, increase external engagements and advance the work that's been done by the faculty. The Dean will join the productive and collaborative Dean's Council, working collaboratively with the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Dean of the School of Business, and the Dean of the School of Music. Additionally, the Dean will work collaboratively with the Provost and Vice Provost, and other members of executive leadership to provide leadership and structure to the College.
The College of Education, Health Sciences, and Human Services is currently evolving from a unit with education programs to a unit that houses education and professional programs (currently those include Communication Disorders and Sciences and Mental Health Counseling; Nursing is planned for the near future).

Department of Education
The Department of Education offers baccalaureate degree programs leading to NYSED Initial Certification in the areas of Early Childhood Education (Birth to grade 2), Childhood Education (grades 1-6) and Students with Disabilities (K-12), with options for dual major combinations. At the graduate level, our offerings include master's degree programs in Curriculum & Instruction, Literacy Education, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), Language & Learning, and Clinical Mental Health Counseling, as well as Advanced Certificate programs in TESOL, Bilingual Education, Child Advocacy Studies, and Educational Leadership. All graduate programs except for the Master of Arts in Language & Learning and the Child Advocacy Studies Certificate lead to NYSED Professional Certification, or in the case of Mental Health Counseling, professional licensure.
Department of Communication Disorders and Sciences (CDS)
The Department of Communication Disorders and Sciences at SUNY Fredonia offers a Bachelor in Science in Communication Disorders and Sciences, and a Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology degree. MS graduates meet the Academic and Clinical hour competence requirements for ASHA certification for New York State licensure, and for Initial Certification as a Teacher of Students with Speech and Language Disabilities (TSSLD).
The CDS on-campus clinic, the Henry C. Youngerman Center for Communication Disorders, offers a full range of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology services, including diagnostic, intervention, and counseling services, for individuals across the age range. The Center is open to members of the campus and to the community and hosts a Stroke/Head Injury support group for individuals with acquired language and cognitive communicative disorders. In addition, the Youngerman Preschool Program provides educational instruction and multisensory activities for all developmental and educational domains with a focus on language and early literacy skills.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Advance the vision for the College of Education, Health Sciences, and Human Services; aligned with campus mission and initiatives in the campus Strategic Plan. This vision should include supporting growth of new undergraduate, graduate and online programs;
- Grow and develop the College's academic programs, instruction, and scholarship, with an emphasis on applied learning;
- Facilitate relationships with local and regional school districts to help foster students' engagement;
- Demonstrate solid stewardship of resources;
- Serve as our Chief Certification Officer at SUNY Fredonia;
- Provide leadership in the recruitment, development, retention, supervision, and assessment of faculty and staff members;
- Create a climate that encourages all members of the College of Education, Health Sciences, and Human Services community to contribute positively and productively to departmental, college, and university goals;
- Oversee compliance with AAQEP accreditation standards;
- Advance successful development and fundraising activities;
- Enhance the diversity of the faculty, staff, student body, and curriculum;
- Advance international initiatives within the College of Education, Health Sciences, and Human Services and the university;
- Develop and grow productive relationships with internal constituencies and constituencies external to the College of Education, Health Sciences, and Human Services;
- Serve as an active, collegial member of the Academic Affairs senior leadership team on the Deans Council and Provost's Council.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Earned doctorate from an accredited institution and a record of teaching, scholarship/creative activity appropriate for appointment as professor with tenure in a discipline within the College of Education, Health Sciences, and Human Services;
- Progressive administrative experience;
- Commitment to teacher education;
- Experience in academic administration, minimally at the level of Department Chair;
- Experience working effectively with the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and other relevant external accreditation bodies such as AAQEP, CAEP, CACREP, and ASHA;
- Demonstrated ability to lead faculty to achieve excellence in teaching, scholarship, creative activity, and outreach;
- Demonstrated effectiveness in planning, administration, personnel, and fiscal management;
- Demonstrated ability to foster relationships with local and regional communities, alumni, and other stakeholders;
- Experience with the supervision and evaluation of faculty and staff (e.g., tenure-review) in a collective bargaining setting;
- Experience with developing or administering professional programs in education, health sciences and/or human services areas;
- Demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion;
- Effective written communication skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstrated support of growing online programs, specifically in education and human services;
- Record of accomplishment in recruitment and retention of outstanding and diverse faculty, staff, and students;
- Experience working in K-12 setting;
- Experience involving faculty, staff, students, and administrative personnel in collaborative decision-making;
- Experience with institutional development/fundraising;
- Proven record of success in external grant writing.
