GENERAL DESCRIPTION 

Reporting to the Associate Dean of Students and Director of Residence Life and Conference Services, the Assistant Dean of Residential Engagement and Community Standards, a live-on position, manages residential engagement and serves as the delegated designee to Pitzer College’s Chief Conduct Officer.  The Assistant Dean of Residential Engagement and Community Standards will work collaboratively with the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, campus partners and student leaders in implementing a co-curricular programming model focused on cultivating a safe and caring on-campus learning community and a student development and success driven student conduct program designed to foster pivotal and restorative moments supporting holistic transformational student growth as citizens and leaders, life-long.                           

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Lead, support, and empower the Residence Life staff, Resident Assistants, and other student leaders to ensure a quality residential experience for students. Ensure their work is productive, impactful and in alignment with college and division priorities.

• Create, implement, lead, and assess an innovative residential co-curricular model with Faculty in Residence, Campus Life, Student Success Initiatives, and other partnering offices;  

• Work closely and collaboratively with Faculty in Residence.

• Attend monthly check in meetings with the Assistant Vice President and Dean of Students regarding conduct matters and trends.

• Collaboratively create, implement, and lead student staff programming, duty, and/or administrative expectations.

• Develop and instill an inclusive, safe, and supportive community in all residence halls.

• Primary administrator of the Maxient system including training new staff, ongoing upkeep of files/data, system configuration, developing, reviewing, and employing written correspondences

• Interpret and explain complex policies and procedures regarding student, group, and club/organizational disciplinary policies, procedures, and follow-up correspondences including, but not limited to: notices of investigation, conferences, sanction completion notices, cross-campus complaints, and any other correspondences related to the processing of student disciplinary matters. 

• Adhere to timelines, policies, and procedures for students in the case processing and investigations and interpret Pitzer College and TCCS (The Claremont Colleges Services) policy as appropriate. 

• Works in partnership with Pitzer Academic Support Services, Residence Life, OSA, Student Senate, Title IX Office, Campus Safety, TCCS, cross-campus student conduct officers, faculty, Athletics, Registrar, Campus Life, Monsour Counseling and Psychological Services, EmPOWER Center, collaborative departments assisting in the response to campus bias incidents, the Pitzer Behavior Intervention Team, Office of the Dean of Faculty, and other agents of student success and Campus Safety as necessary in response to cases, crisis, and/or the completion of sanctions. 

• Demonstrate a commitment to student learning, development, success (personal, academic, career, and civic responsibility-driven), and social justice. Using a strong understanding of student development theory.

• Provide oversight of the collaborative approach to student development and success driven sanctions and responsible for tracking successful completion of sanctions.  Provide guidance when necessary, with Housing and Residential Life, in the consistent management and adjudication of housing referrals.

• Obtain ongoing restorative justice training, establish a team of restorative justice facilitators, and facilitate restorative justice conferences with involved parties. Participate in on-going professional development trainings including annual mandatory Title IX, BIT, etc.  

• Provide direct support and serve as a primary resource to student affinity groups and students of marginalized backgrounds and identities to help ensure student success. Develop relationships and collaborate with critical partners at Pitzer and across the Claremont Colleges including but not limited to: The Office of Black Student Affairs (OBSA), Chicano Latino Student Affairs (CLSA), Monsour Counseling and Psychological Services, McAlister Center for Religious Activities, the Queer Resource Center (QRC), EmPOWER Center, and other resource groups.

• Demonstrate awareness, tact, and care in working with diverse student populations and establish successful partnerships with students, faculty, staff, and parents.  Ongoing commitment to increasing personal and professional capacities as it relates to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.

• Serve as part of the live-on, on-call rotation in the response to student crisis, distress, support, and emergency response. 

• Conduct, analyze, and report on trends in student behavior trends and experiences reported and collected to develop and advance evidence-based initiatives, sanctions, and programs.

• Manage statistical and confidential records in compliance with FERPA, and the Clery Act.  Maintain accurate files of disciplinary proceedings, complete case entry into the Maxient database, facilitate student conduct records checks upon request, and utilize various database systems to access sensitive student data.

• Serve as a designee for the Assistant Vice President and Dean of Students and/or Associate Dean of Students and Director of Residence Life and Conference Services at meetings and/or student conduct matters upon request.

• Respond to crisis situations, review daily reports of alleged violations to the Code of Student Conduct, determine the appropriate and/or immediate response(s), including the assessment of and coordination of implementing an immediate interim suspension, no contact orders, and/or the implementation of interim measures. 

• Provide leadership and initiative in the office’s residence life and student conduct program assessment, development (including student learning outcomes), and implementation. 

• Provide support, consultation, and training for faculty, staff, and students upon request. Develop and implement training of hearing officers (including investigations and merit determination), Judicial Council, and serve as the delegated designee student affairs representative and advisor to Judicial Council during hearings. 

• Develop, expand, implement, and market educational presentations for the campus, faculty, staff, students, new student orientation, student groups, and clubs/organizations (in and out of the classroom) in relation to the Code of Student Conduct, Residence Life policies and procedures, civility, citizenship, academic integrity, alcohol and drugs, ethics, campus policies and procedures, and other topics in partnership with campus offices. 

• Responsible for developing the College’s annual Clery report and Biennial Alcohol Drug Free Schools report, Campus Security Authority Training, as well as serve on the Pitzer Intervention Team and Pitzer College’s Clery Compliance team.

• Participate in live-on, on-call duty rotation.

• Select, supervise, and train student assistants as applicable.

• Serve on divisional, campus, and consortium committees and/or workgroups.

• Assist with the coordination of administrative functions of the office, including maintaining websites (the student conduct website and Residence Life website).

• Other related duties as assigned.

Basic Qualification:  Master’s degree is required.  Preferred programs include College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Social Work, or a related field. 

• A minimum of three (3) years of full-time experience working in a comprehensive and educationally-driven student conduct unit in higher education developing and implementing educational opportunities and programs and/or resources, supports, and interventions in related fields of practice, and supervision of staff members with at least 2 of those years in Residence Life

• Must also have experience managing Title IX and academic integrity related student conduct adjudication from referral, facilitating student conduct hearings, appeal procedures, and case closure.

  • Previous higher education experience providing services to undergraduate students, parents, faculty, and staff in higher education is preferred.

  • Must possess knowledge of trauma-informed practices.

  • Experience coordinating and facilitating restorative justice conferences is preferred.

• Demonstrated progressively responsible administrative experience in coordinating peer and/or education programs, disciplinary case management, hearing facilitation, oversight, recruitment and training of hearing officers/investigators, and Judicial Council, developing educational sanctions in higher education, developing and implementing educational opportunities and programs and/or resources, supports, and interventions in related fields of practice, and supervision of staff members.

• Demonstrated experience working with diverse student populations and establishing successful partnerships with students, faculty, staff, and parents.  The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience managing statistical and confidential records in compliance with FERPA, and the Clery Act.

• Candidate will be asked to demonstrate knowledge of student development theory and application in order to demonstrate the correlation between these theories and student conduct matters.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

The individual must possess knowledge, skills and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

• Must have access to reliable and secure computer and internet connection. Must maintain password protection for work files and records and ensure that no one else has access to password and login credentials at remote work site.

• Must have access to a dedicated and suitable workstation at remote location, including desk or table and supporting, upright chair. Must ensure workstation is safe and free from hazards.

Licenses/Certifications: Demonstrated completion of Association of Student Conduct Administration Institute and Title IX investigation and trauma informed practices certifications is preferred.

Supervisory Responsibility: Approximately 4 student staff employees

Time Type: Full-time 40 hours per week

Annual Pay Schedule: 12-month

Work Schedule: This is a regular, full-time staff position working 12 months per year.  Live-on position. Work hours will be scheduled between Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Required to work some evenings and/or weekends (including Pitzer related events, 5C events, duty, conferences, etc.)

Compensation:  Budgeted Salary:  $75,000

• Meal Plan, and up to $1,000 in funding to support professional development. This position will serve as part of the live on staff on call rotation.

Other Requirements:  This position is a live-on professional position participating in the live-on professional staff duty schedule.  

Physical Requirements: This is generally a sedentary position. Must be able to:

• Sit for prolonged periods of time;

• Operate a computer for prolonged periods of time;

• Communicate with others by email, in person and over the telephone;

• Read printed materials and a computer screen;

• Have the mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment;

• Assist with the set-up and teardown of event tables, signage and other materials. (Requires reaching overhead, grasping, pulling, pushing, stooping, bending, and twisting); and

• Have the stamina to manage a high-volume workload in a fast-paced work environment.
