We are seeking a full-time Lab Safety Program Manager to join the team of a growing makerspace ecosystem at Northeastern University. This position, which reports to the Executive Director of the Makerspace at EXP, will serve as safety advisor for a global initiative, while assisting the rest of the team with creating and maintaining fabrication-oriented safety and training documentation. Successful candidates will have a deliberate approach to safety, inclusivity, strong documentation skills, and an interest in formulating and implementing innovative improvements to the makerspace.
The Makerspace at EXP:
The Makerspace at EXP is a transdisciplinary teaching and learning innovation center, intended to be a crossroads of creativity, camaraderie, and safety for every student, staff, and faculty member from all Northeastern University colleges. With a focus on internal and external outreach, innovation, and collaboration, the makerspace will support the Northeastern community in producing everything from personal passion projects to new ventures and course assignments while fostering an experiential learning community that extends beyond the space itself.
The Makerspace at EXP will be a highly visible and accessible resource for the Northeastern University community. Designed to be a hub for a making ecosystem across Northeastern's global campuses, the staff of the makerspace will lead the charge on collaboration within Northeastern's network-including building out new infrastructure, such as a Makerspace Ecosystem website to improve student access to making spaces on Northeastern's campus.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in occupational safety, environmental health and safety, engineering, design, arts, fabrication, manufacturing technology, or a related field is required.
Teaching, mentoring, interpersonal, presentation, and written communication skills and ability to work with, receive and implement feedback from a broad spectrum of people.
3-5 years' experience working as a safety specialist with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff in an academic environment.
Demonstrated success with safety and documentation, especially with regard to shops and makerspaces.
Strong organizational and time management skills and ability to handle multiple workstreams.
Knowledge and understanding of current Environmental Health and Safety practices within makerspaces or shops.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead team to develop safety policies and best practices for inclusive, enthusiastic, and safe use of makerspaces
Collaborate with the Makerspace at EXP team, Office of Academic Research Safety, Environmental Compliance and Occupational Safety, and other campus teams to write training and safety documentation for the entirety of the makerspace ecosystem
Create an environment of student empowerment and safety awareness
Work in an inclusive manner with all students regardless of backgrounds and interests, especially those from non-dominant groups in STEM
Support and mentor students, and, when needed, act as an advocate for student needs and foster a positive and inclusive work and learning environment
Act as advisor to team on best practices with regard to safety for additional shops and makerspaces globally.
Assist the Executive Director in other duties as needed
Additional Information:
This is a 40-hour-per-week role with a flexible schedule, including scheduled weekends and weeknights as necessary.
