Reporting to the Dean of the Columbia University School of Nursing, the Vice Dean of Education (VDE) serves as the Chief Academic Officer within the School of Nursing. As a member of the senior leadership team, the VDE works closely with the school's other Associate Deans to provide coordinated leadership of the school. The development, implementation, and evaluation of programs of instruction for the Masters Direct Entry (MDE) for non-nurse college graduates, Master of Science (ACML), and Doctor of Nursing Practice fall under the purview of the VDE.
The Vice Dean of Education should be a dynamic, innovative, and inclusive thought leader who will provide guidance to the faculty in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the curriculum. Representing the School across the University and to the outside community on matters related to the programs of instruction is another key responsibility of the position. The VDE will manage two Assistant Deans of Academic Affairs, Masters Programs and DNP Programs as the Executive.
Responsibilities and Duties
Curricular Leadership
Leads the development of the School's clinical academic programs (MDE, MS, DNP), including development of curricular and program innovations and educational partnerships
Advance teaching development and pedagogy practice for effective, inclusive, interprofessional and antiracist teaching and learning
Conducts periodic studies to determine program feasibilities/trends;
Explores and implements curricular innovations
Evaluates the linkages between and among the academic degree programs for their impact on one another and the total academic portfolio;
Oversees the development, implementation and planning for sufficient clinical training sites and clinical preceptors to meet the academic program needs, including the development of programs that recognize and support clinical preceptors;
Collaborates with University Counsel for an up-to-date portfolio of Clinical Practice Agreements and Educational Agreements
Identifies resources and budget necessary to support the academic mission, including simulation, clinical placements, preceptors, teaching technology, online platforms for students and to maintain accurate data.
Intra and Inter School Collaboration
Collaborates with those engaged in clinical practice and other educators and scientists to identify new opportunities for educational programming;
Works with the Vice Dean for Scholarship and Research on aspects of the Ph.D.
Program based on future needs, forecasts the resources needed to ensure continued academic program excellence;
Quality Monitoring and Reporting
Leads the implementation of the School's academic programs, ensuring adherence to academic policies and professional standards:
Monitors regulations and standards governing professional nursing education to ensure compliance.
Develops and communicates evaluation data leading to program improvement and faculty performance within the academic program.
Assumes responsibility for the evaluation of the school's MDE, MS, and DNP academic programs, including course evaluation, program evaluation, and faculty evaluations and exit surveys;
Oversees all external reporting required for successful accreditation of the School and its programs and professional and university databases;
Provides all documentation for graduates re: licensure and certification
Mentorship, Academics and Professional Leadership
Assists in developing the School's strategic initiatives;
Provides leadership to the school's Program Directors
Anticipates the challenges faced by the academic degree programs and convenes the Program Directors to discuss those challenges.
Consults with the Dean in the process of appointment and evaluation of faculty members.
Partners with the Program Directors and the Vice Dean for Finance and Administration to develop an annual budget to support the academic programs and its component supporting units;
Provides leadership and oversight for the development of an annual plan for teaching assignments.
Collaborates with the leadership to recommend annual enrollment targets for the academic programs;
Student Academic Progress and Enrichment
Lead student retention and enrichment programs
Ongoing monitoring of student performance and academic success.
Ensuring a safe and inclusive learning environment.
Lead all aspects of clinical placements, student onboarding and Clinical Placement Agreements with all affiliates (approx. 300).
A doctoral degree with experience equivalent to the rank of full professor. A demonstrated track record in nursing scholarship is vital.
Proven experience in graduate nursing education and progressive leadership responsibility in academic administration.
A strong appreciation and an advocate for diversity in the broadest sense.
Demonstrated track record of attracting, managing, and mentoring colleagues.
Ability to function as member of a team both within the School of Nursing and across Columbia University Medical Center. Proven ability to develop trust and to build strong collaborative working relationships with clinical and research faculty.

Hiring Salary Range: $250,000 - $300,000
