The Position

Do you enjoy teaching Spanish and have the energy, passion, and creativity to engage with advanced middle school students? The Sage School is looking for an engaging, creative, and adaptable Spanish teacher for middle school. The individual shall have full-time responsibility for providing highly engaging learning experiences in Spanish language classes. The individual will play a crucial role in strengthening our partial-immersion Spanish program and providing students a strong foundation in language acquisition. Their responsibilities include designing and delivering engaging lesson plans that cover various aspects of Spanish language instruction, such as acceptance of other ways of communication, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, and writing. They will guide students in developing their speaking and listening skills, auditory and written comprehension, and appreciation for the world’s cultures and languages -- all while fostering collaboration, teamwork, and belonging.

As a member of the faculty, the Spanish Teacher may also serve as an Upper School Advisor. The Advisory program is one of the most important ways through which students develop feelings of belonging in the school community. It is designed to create a strong support system that students need to develop academically, socially, and emotionally through daily contact, support, and relationship-building.

Spanish Teacher Responsibilities

• Teach a combination of Spanish language classes across the school at a variety of developmental levels (anticipated Grades 6 - 8, dependent upon departmental needs)
• Establish and maintain standards of student engagement/ behavior required to achieve effective participation in all activities in accordance with classroom management best practices and the School’s expectations.
• Communicate in a timely and professional manner with all community stakeholders, including parents/guardians.
• Demonstrate a knowledge of varied teaching strategies to differentiate learning, employing a hands-on approach to teaching and learning that engages all students.
• Actively participate in the development of the Spanish department curriculum by building thoughtful, creative lessons, selecting resources, etc.
• Stay current with the latest developments and research in language education by attending professional development opportunities to enhance teaching skills and knowledge.
• Collaborate with other teachers and staff to develop interdisciplinary projects and integrate concepts across the curriculum

Essential Job Functions

• Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
• Communicate effectively in English and Spanish.
• The ability to work under pressure, prioritize tasks, and manage time effectively to meet deadlines.
• Maintain familiarity with Sage’s Spanish curriculum maps.
• Maintain in-depth knowledge and a continued interest in content, current language education research, best practices, and professional growth.
• Maintain a commitment to excellence and possess the ability to work independently and collaboratively with flexibility and enthusiasm.
• Possess a strong work ethic, sense of humor, and a kind spirit.
• Have experience with and/or understanding of gifted education.

Requirements:

• Native or near native fluency
• Mastery in working with a variety of levels of language proficiency in one classroom
• Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with students and parents
• Bachelor's Degree in Spanish or education required; Master's degree preferred
• Minimum of three years’ experience working with children at this age level
• Willingness to work with colleagues to integrate curriculum, where possible
• Proficiency with technology
