Associate Director for Sorority & Fraternity Life
Student and Campus Life (SCL) inspires transformation in all Cornell students on their journey of individual, academic and personal evolution. Our division is comprised of leading student affairs experts who support our campus on pressing student life matters including public service, health, wellness, social justice, residential living, food services, sports, recreation, career services, and student activities and organizations including sorority and fraternity life. We provide support and services to roughly 25,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students on multiple campuses in the U.S. and abroad.

Sorority & Fraternity Life (SFL) provides support and resources to the 53 recognized sorority and fraternity organizations at Cornell, which is composed of over 3,000 undergraduate students. SFL supports student leaders and their communities as they cultivate an inclusive, meaningful, innovative, and developmental co-curricular sorority and fraternity experience. With a focus on individual and community health & well-being, through advocacy and innovation, we will collaborate with, empower, and support student leaders. Members will engage in developmental co-curricular experiences to create and foster ethical, inclusive, and meaningful communities.
The Associate Director of Sorority and Fraternity Life (SFL) serves as a key leadership member of the SFL team, contributing to the overall strategic planning and supervision of the office in partnership with the SFL Director. This position leads the Council Services Team, which includes professional staff, student leaders, and a community of stakeholders, including advisors, advocates, and HQ staff. A critical aspect of the Associate Director's role is building and maintaining relationships with various stakeholders to ensure that the operation of the facilities and chapter advisement align with alumni and university expectations. This position also serves as the liaison to the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards (OSCCS) and works closely with the Director of SFL to develop a sustainable process that empowers student leaders while supporting accountability and student self-governance.
The Associate Director provides leadership and vision for the development and facilitation of training and educational programs that advance student development and learning within the sorority and fraternity community.
This position will direct the expansion and recognition process and will supports the recruitment and retention efforts of the Council Services Team. Additionally, the Associate Director supervises professional staff members and student staff as needed and serves as a coach to chapters across all three sorority and fraternity councils.
Campus Collaboration -
With students being the core of the work of the department, the Associate Director builds and sustains collaborative relationships with all constituencies who support Sorority and Fraternity life on campus which include but are not limited to chapter advisors, house directors, alumni, parents, local community members, national headquarters staff, and faculty.
Success Factors -
The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to develop and build strong relationships with various stakeholders, including students, alumni, staff, parents, live-in advisors, community members, and campus partners, fostering an atmosphere of inclusion within sorority and fraternity life. They will occasionally represent the Director and must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills. This role requires strong organizational, leadership, planning, and execution abilities to further the strategic initiatives of the office, as well as the capacity to effectively manage crisis and emergency situations.
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree in Student Affairs or related field and a minimum of 3 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience advising student organizations, with sorority and fraternity organizations specifically.
- Demonstrated experience in sorority and fraternity advising, program and event planning, leadership development, alcohol education, recruitment, conduct and/or hazing prevention.
- Knowledge of best practices and ability to infuse research with practical experience to create intentional leadership programs for sororities and fraternities.
- Willingness to work in a team oriented and collaborative environment.
- The applicant must be willing to work irregular and flexible hours including evenings and weekends.
- Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
Preferred Qualifications
- 5 years of experience in student affairs or a related field.
- Experience with implementing student affairs best practices including, event planning resources, student leader training, collaborative and meaningful program creation.
- Experience with advising sororities and fraternities, peer led judicial processes, and fraternal facility residential experience.
- Affiliation with a sorority or fraternity.
