Assistant Professor in Nutrition and Metabolic Regulation
The Department of Nutrition in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Davis is recruiting an Assistant Professor of Nutrition with a preferred emphasis in metabolic regulation. This is an academic year (9-month), tenure track Assistant Professor position that includes an appointment in the California Agricultural Experiment Station (AES). Faculty members who hold an Agricultural Experiment Station appointment have a responsibility to conduct research and outreach relevant to the mission of the Land Grant mission of the California Agricultural Experiment Station. Participation in outreach programs and performance of University service are also expected.
The appointee is expected to establish a competitively funded extramural research program in nutrition science and precision health to address critical or emerging issues in human nutrition, metabolic regulation, and identifying sources of individual variability. The appointee will be responsible for teaching two to three undergraduate and graduate courses each year, contribute to curricular development, and provide undergraduate and graduate student advising and mentoring. The appointee will teach an undergraduate course on Metabolic Regulation for Precision Health (NUT 198) and a required graduate course Advanced Nutrition III: Nutrition in Health and Disease (NUB 210C), and contribute to other course modules as appropriate. Participation in and development of public outreach and/or community engagement programs, and performance of departmental and university service is expected. This position is expected to collaborate with Cooperative Extension specialists and advisors, partners in allied industries or other appropriate public stakeholders.
The Department of Nutrition is seeking applicants with a strong focus on regulation of human metabolism, identifying sources of individual and phenotypic variability in response to foods, food components and diet patterns. Research into understanding the dynamic interrelationships among biologic and other external factors which can manifest through altered metabolic responses is critical to developing personalized and more precise nutrition recommendations for human health. Areas of research interests include investigating cellular signaling and regulation of metabolic pathways using animal or in vitro models, or clinical trials, and effectively utilizing multiomic data sets. The appointee is expected to possess a strong nutrition science background with disciplinary expertise in metabolism, innovative biochemistry approaches, and in applying systems biology and data analytic tools to understanding metabolism and responses to foods. This basic and translational science position will generate transformative evidence to move the scope of nutrition science and precision health forward. Knowledge gained through this research can be applied to improving nutritional recommendations for health promotion and disease mitigation across diverse populations. This position will be able to interact synergistically and collaborate with others in the department and across campus doing interdisciplinary work. This research area closely aligns with the core department mission to advance nutritional biology and translation to improving human health through research, education, and outreach.
This recruitment is conducted at the assistant rank. The resulting hire will be at the assistant rank, regardless of the proposed appointee's qualifications.
