At Stony Brook Medicine, our Patient Access Representatives are responsible for completing varied, diverse and specialized duties to support the Revenue Cycle, Compliance and Patient Experience by accurately and efficiently completing tasks in the areas of Registration, Financial Screening and Verification and patient throughput.

The Patient Access Representative assigned to Inpatient Follow Up is a key member of the Patient Access Services team, responsible for completing inpatient registrations, ensuring financial clearance, securing regulatory signatures and collecting inpatient point of service payments at the bedside. The Follow Up Registrar may also have the responsibility to ensure that all patient valuables are collected, documented and released in accordance with compliance standards. Ensures that insurance admission notifications and inpatient authorizations are obtained as necessary. Professionally interacts with all hospital and clinical staff. Promotes a positive experience in all patient encounters.
Duties of a Patient Access Inpatient Representative may include the following but are not limited to:
Complete patient registration at inpatient bedside, including required demographic and regulatory information, confirming insurance eligibility and patient cost share (copay/deposit, etc) using electronic and other system resources.
Communicates to each patient/patient representative information about their health care insurance coverage and cost share responsibilities, confirming how the encounter will be paid and assists in screening self-pay patients to determine Medicaid or Charity Care options, referring to a Financial Counselor when appropriate.
Review registrations for completeness and correctness, supports registration areas with financial services expertise.
Ensures that compliance regulations are met (including securing consents and regulatory signatures from patients or designee, essential for treatment and payment.
Obtain Inpatient Authorizations when necessary
Create and maintain insurance verification and authorization resource tool
Collect co-payments and deposits at time of registration/admission and for self pay patients, provide information on financial care counseling resources.
Ensure audit and compliance standards are met for patient valuable collection policies and procedure
Support cashiering compliance and reconciliation standards are met for point of service collection.
Associates Degree with one year working experience in financial services, public health, health or related industry such as insurance.
In lieu of degree, two years of demonstrated excellence working in financial services, public health, health, or related industry such as banking or insurance.
Skill experience in payment collection, insurance reimbursement, access services.Excellence in verbal and written communication, computing and multi-tasking skills.
Candidate must demonstrate experience and expertise in speaking with customers and can work well with persons who are under stress (such as sick patients and distressed family members)
Strong PC experience and Microsoft Office: Excel, PowerPoint, and Word skills required.
Familiarity with Medical insurance benefits, demonstrated through experience with EMR computerized registration/Financial/IT systems.
Knowledge of medical terminology.
Previous experience as a Patient Access Representative at a Medical Center is preferred.
