Job Summary
The College of Innovation and Technology (CIT) at the University of Michigan-Flint is looking for a full-time Career Advisor to join our student-centered advising team. Reporting to the Director of CIT Student Services, the Career Advisor provides proactive, data-informed, and individualized career advising to students pursuing a CIT program, with the goal of helping them explore professional pathways, contribute to experiential learning, and prepare for successful employment or continued education following graduation.
You will balance direct student support with leadership responsibilities. In addition to managing a student caseload, the Career Advisor leads CIT's mandatory Professional Career Development (PCD) Program, facilitates workshops focused on career preparation, and develops tools that support students professional readiness. The Career Advisor also oversees the creation and implementation of a strategic Career Advising marketing plan, and represents CIT in programs that enhance students transition to the workforce. As part of a collaborative, student-first environment, you will work with faculty, staff, and campus partners to create a coordinated and impactful advising experience.
Responsibilities*
Student Interaction
Provide inclusive, student-centered career advising to students pursuing a CIT program
Build and sustain meaningful advising relationships with students through regular outreach, follow-up, and personalized support
Create a welcoming, safe environment where students can explore and pursue professional goals
Support students in resume and cover letter development, job and internship search strategies, and application preparation
Facilitate learning by guiding students through the development of essential job search and workplace skills
Use research-based strategies and NACE best practices to engage students in career planning and goal-setting
Refer students to appropriate university resources, including their assigned Academic Advisor, Counseling and Psychological Services, and Disability and Accessibility Support Services
Log student interactions in the university's advising systems, including TargetX and student notes software
Ensure successful transitions from college to career through intentional programming and career advising interventions
Coordinate and facilitate career-related workshops and group advising sessions
Deliver career-related presentations in classroom settings
Professional Career Development (PCD) Program
Coordinate and administer all aspects of CIT's mandatory Professional Career Development (PCD) Program
Develop training and support materials for the PCD Program, including a comprehensive Career Advisor job manual
Track student progress through the PCD Program and maintain accurate records
Collaborate with stakeholders to communicate requirements, milestones, and expectations
Assess the PCD Program and implement improvements based on outcomes and feedback
Train and oversee student employees who support PCD-related programming, as applicable
Planning and Assessment
Use technology and data to inform and support student success, experiential learning, and post-graduation planning
Lead or contribute to the design, implementation, and assessment of career-related programs, and advising strategies
Be a content expert in college-wide planning, assessment, and strategic plans related to career development
Review advising tools, workflows, communications, and policies to support continuous improvement
Collaborate with the CIT INSPIRE team to ensure students experience smooth internship placements and meaningful experiential learning opportunities
Attend CIT and university-wide meetings to remain informed on policies, career readiness programs, and latest best practices
Support Services and Professional Development
Support the onboarding of CIT Student Services staff through training, and knowledge-sharing
Oversee or provide guidance to student staff
Facilitate professional development programming for the advising team
Collaborate with your supervisor to set professional development goals and pursue related opportunities
Represent CIT on campus committees, working groups, and career-related task forces
Attend Fall and Winter Graduation Ceremonies
Perform other duties as assigned, consistent with the scope of the role
Required Qualifications*
Bachelor's degree
Three or more years of experience working as an academic advisor, career advisor or in a similar career development related role
Proficiency in leading projects and collaborating within a team environment
High level of comfort with using technology
Proficient in adapting complex content for delivery across both virtual and face-to-face environments

Modes of Work
The work requirements allow both onsite and offsite work and an employee has an expected recurring onsite presence. On occasion, the employee may be required and must be available to work onsite more frequently if necessitated by unit leadership or their designee and/or the job requirements.
