Founded in 1967, Gaston Day School is a nonsectarian, college-preparatory school for grades preschool through 12 with approximately 500 students and 65 full and part-time faculty and staff. Gaston Day School’s mission: To educate our students and prepare them for academic success and responsible, productive lives.
The 60-acre campus features multiple academic buildings, a state-of-the-art library, a visual and performing arts center with a 550-seat performance hall and dance studio. In addition, the Student Activity Center includes chef-curated dining options, an impressive gym and workout spaces, and community gathering spaces. The Dean of Students and Middle School Coordinator is a 12-month position beginning in the summer of 2025. This person is responsible for oversight of conduct and personal development for students in grades 5-12. In addition to student well-being and development, this person is responsible for all aspects of the middle school curriculum, programming, and faculty at Gaston Day School to ensure alignment between the school’s mission and all activities of the Middle School division.
Broad responsibilities:
Acting as an educational leader of the Middle School, responsible for its day-to-day operations.
Reviewing and evaluating academic programs, resources, and faculty.
Establishing programs for the orientation of new teachers, for in-service training of all teachers, and for the evaluation of classroom teachers to ensure that teachers are familiar with and adhere to school policies in all areas of the school operation.
Maintaining complete academic records on all students and overseeing the grading and reporting of standards/methods used by teachers in measuring student achievement.
Being aware of the educational, physical, social, and psychological needs of the members of our middle school community and developing plans for meeting these needs.
Serving as a member of the Academic Council and overseeing the Honor Council.
Assisting in the admission process for the testing, interviewing, and evaluating of applicants for enrollment.
Managing a budget for the Middle School academic needs and coordinating standardized testing in grades 5th-8th.
Ensuring compliance with legal requirements of government regulations and agencies, and maintaining the educational standards established by the State of North Carolina and by those agencies that examine and accredit the school.
Overseeing the student activities program and working with constituencies on campus to execute defined initiatives.

Experience and Education Requirements:
Ideal candidates should have a master’s degree in education, administration, or another related field or equivalent experience. 5+ years of experience in a K-12 education setting required; 3+ years in an independent school setting and classroom teaching experience preferred.
Reporting:
The Dean of Students and Middle School Coordinator will report to the Head of School.
