Part-Time General Counselor (Pool)


FLSA Status: Exempt

Salary Schedule: Placement on the adjunct faculty salary schedule is based upon education and credited experience. Initial placement can range from $83.09 to $103.42 per hour (Salary Schedule AJ - Laboratory Rate).

The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s) of any particular position. Duties and Responsibilities

1. Teach college success and career, and personal development courses
2. Provide comprehensive counseling services to students, including academic, career, and personal counseling on a drop-in and appointment basis
3. Assist students in clarifying their educational goals, developing student educational plans (SEPs), and selecting courses
4. Collaborate with both instructional and counseling faculty and staff and with special programs such as First Year Experience, CalWORKS, CARE, DSPS, and EOPS to maximize student success
5. Participate in the implementation of transfer and matriculation activities at the college
6. Participate in outreach activities and events in campus classrooms, local high schools, adult schools, and community agencies
7. Provide follow-up services to students on probation and dismissal status
8. Utilize and keep abreast of advanced counseling methods, which include integrating technology to support student learning and career objectives

Knowledge of:

1. The matriculation process as it applies to California Community Colleges
2. Counseling and student development theories and relevant applications to program development
3. University articulation agreements and transfer requirements for counseling community college students

Skills and Abilities:

1. Teaching college success and career and personal development courses
2. Preparation for or experience in designing and preparing Student Educational Plans (SEPs) for community college students
3. Provide short-term personal counseling to students from diverse backgrounds
4. Develop and maintain student counseling notes in a timely and effective manner
5. Demonstrate strength in interpersonal communication
6. Experience with intervention programs that support student success
7. Develop innovative programs that strengthen the quality of counseling services to students
8. Use computer databases to retrieve student, college, and career information
9. Use a variety of career assessments
10. Make appropriate college and community referrals
11. Counseling at a California community college

Job Requirements:

• Master's or above in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling OR the equivalent (see below) (NOTE: A bachelor's degree in one of the listed degrees and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) is an alternative qualification for this discipline.)
• Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to, and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice both within and outside of the classroom.

a) Degree Equivalence
The employee or applicant possesses a degree(s) with similar content to those listed for the relevant discipline. The name of the degree is close to that specified on the Disciplines List but the degree either has a different title or area of expertise or the coursework is slightly different. Equivalence is established through analysis of transcripts and coursework.

b) Academic Background Equivalence
Related to disciplines in which a Master's degree is not generally expected or available. The employee or applicant must have completed at least 24 semester units (or equivalent) of coursework in the academic field being applied for, and must possess at least the equivalent level of achievement and the equivalent in breadth, depth of understanding, and rigor in each of the following:

i. a broad cultural education usually met by the general education requirements for any Bachelor's or Associate's degree, and

ii. a detailed study of the discipline in breadth, depth, and rigor, usually met by coursework required for the degree major.

c) Professional Achievement Equivalence
The employee or applicant must have completed the general education requirements for any Bachelor's or Associate's degree, and show evidence of outstanding professional achievement and/or substantial training in the requested field. The employee or applicant must submit substantial evidence, which demonstrates that their preparation, teaching experience, work experience, and ability are equivalent to those expected from a person who meets the minimum qualifications.
