Job Description:
Career Services at Point Loma Nazarene University is seeking a qualified and collaborative candidate for a full-time Career Advisor position. Career Services is seeking applicants with experience and passion in the following areas: 1) Career focused advising/coaching in group and individual settings and 2) Developing and maintaining relationships with academic departments, student organizations and Student Life departments in order to support whole student learning.
The Career Advisor provides quality individual and group career advising in support of student and alumni career exploration and planning, internship search, resume and cover letter preparation, graduate school planning, job search skill development, interviewing skill development, workplace transition, career change, and other needs.
A successful candidate will also support the Program Manager in efforts to implement the Career Services vision of ensuring 100% of the PLNU student population is career ready. The vision includes a strategy of integrating career readiness into academic and co-curricular student experience through Talent Development, Student Engagement, and Strategic Partnerships. The Career Advisor will also work in conjunction with university faculty and staff as well as external stakeholders in support of the operational activities that deliver Career Services to the university community.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Career Advising - 60%
Actively represent an understanding of PLNU mission, values, and philosophy as related to Career Services for undergraduate and graduate students.
Deliver career coaching/advising services designed to develop professional relationships with students through a range of approaches, including classroom, co-curricular, individual, drop-in, and group appointments, workshops, and other programs.
Provide consultation to students and/or alumni on job-search tools and strategies, including resume writing, developing cover letters, job-campaign correspondence, interviewing, networking, LinkedIn, informational interviewing and connecting with employers.
Keep abreast of current resources and use of career, occupational, and employment information in providing students with career coaching/advising services.
Conduct research into and provides regular information to students on internships, career opportunities, professional associations, conferences, graduate schools and job listings for students.
Create career content using different modes of digital communication.
In collaboration with campus partners, develop and present group workshops to promote student success. In collaboration with campus partners, develop and implement individual and personalized student outreach to support their academic and personal transitions.
Program Coordination 30%
Assist in developing and maintaining campus programs reflecting the Christian values of the institution and that meet the needs of a diverse body of students.
Collaborate with faculty and staff to provide new and ongoing opportunities for students.
Manage employer inquiries and student communications for job postings through Handshake technology platform.
Support in creating marketing campaigns on any/all social media platforms, emails, newsletters, websites, flyers, and physical materials.
Cultivates relationships with local, regional and national employers to stay abreast of hiring trends in related fields.
Administration 10%
Provide full coverage of Career Services area to greet visitors, answer emails, and take calls; open and close the office on Point Loma campus on a daily basis (Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 4:30 PM)
Schedule class presentations, employer events, and career workshops via Zoom.
Organize logistics for department events - including but not limited to, venue scheduling, catering orders, registration, payment, parking, supplies, invitations, evaluations, campus marketing, vendor management, and oversight of set up and break down activities.
*Other duties may be assigned to this position on a regular or occasional basis to respond to the needs of the university.

QUALIFICATIONS

Strong computer skills to support marketing, communication, and data management.
Bachelor's degree; and/or two to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Evidence of Christian commitment and active church involvement. In addition, staff agree to live in agreement with PLNU's Community Life Covenant.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS The work is primarily sedentary and may require sitting for extended periods of time. Use of computer equipment: computer keyboard, mouse, and monitor. Ability to stand, stoop, push, pull, and lift up to 20 lbs throughout the day.
