Specific Job Title: International Student Advisor
Reports to: Director of International Student & Scholar Services

Job Summary:
St. John's University is a Catholic, Vincentian, metropolitan, global, and anti-racist institution. The International Student & Scholar Services Office is committed to ending practices, structures, and systems that act as barriers to participation for students and scholars across multiple, often intersecting identities.
Under the direction of the Director of International Student and Scholar Services, the International Student Advisor is responsible for advising and assisting international students and scholars with all immigration and visa matters and for contributing to a highly welcoming and supportive environment for St. John's international students. The International Student Advisor serves as a University Designated School Official for the Department of Homeland Security and Alternate Responsible Officer for the Department of State's J-1 Exchange Visitor Program.
As of right now, there are two International Student Advisor positions available.
Essential Functions:
STUDENT AND SCHOLAR SERVICE AND SUPPORT:
Serve as a Designated School Official (DSO) for the Department of Homeland Security and as an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for the Department of State, including performing financial evaluation for eligibility for Forms 1-20 and DS-2019 to new and continuing students and processing I-20s and DS-2019s for both students and scholars
Maintain expert knowledge of governing regulations to advise F-1/J-1 students and scholars on their non-immigrant status, including how to maintain status, employment, travel, visa renewal, change of status, reinstatement, economic hardship, etc.
Provide active case management to an assigned caseload of students
Support international students experiencing a cross-cultural, family, personal or economic crisis, which may impact academic performance
Help students access appropriate community services/resources
Aid students in submitting applications to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS)
Develop and conduct workshops on topics relevant to international students and scholars, including new international student orientation
Prepare certifications of enrollment and expenses for foreign exchange, passport & visa renewals, and authorizations for Social Security cards
COMPLIANCE, DATA MANAGEMENT, AND ADMINISTRATIVE FUNCTIONS:
Provide updates to I-20/DS-2019 application materials, informational publications, and the ISSSO website
Monitor SEVIS alerts on a bimonthly basis
Help to ensure timely registration of F-1 students/validation of J-1 students in SEVIS for every required session
Communicate with colleagues on federal regulations as they relate to F-1 and J-1 students and scholars
Manage office data, records, and reports through the TerraDotta system
Assist with training and supervising new full-time and student office staff
Competencies:
Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills for dealing with and building relationships with students, faculty, community leaders, and colleagues
Must be organized, detail-oriented, able to prioritize tasks, and to work under mandated deadlines in a high-volume environment
Must possess competence in developing and delivering workshops and presentations
Must be able to work independently and responsibly
Supervisory Responsibility:
This position may supervise student workers.
Work Environment:
This position operates in a professional office environment; This position is required to use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, etc.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; move about; sit; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; communicate verbally and in writing.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:
This is a full-time position with expected days being from Monday through Thursday, 8:30-4:30 and Friday 8:30-3:00. This position may require some after hours and weekend work for emergencies and university events. Additionally, this position may require some workdays to extend past standard working hours to accommodate students and scholars in different time zones, etc.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree
1 year of international student advising experience
Preferred Education and Experience:
3+ years of international student advising experience
Knowledge of Banner
Knowledge of TerraDotta
Proficiency in a second language
Experience with study, work, and/or travel outside of the U.S.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications:
Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and pass a criminal history record check to assume the role of DSO and ARO, per federal regulations.

In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary for this position is $64,350. St. John's University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
This position may be relocated to any of St. John's University's physical locations at any time.
