The New Community School is currently hiring a School Counselor for the 2025-2026 school year.
Job Description:
The position is for a School Counselor.. Utilizing leadership, advocacy, and collaboration, this position is responsible for promoting student success, providing preventive services, and responding to identified student needs by implementing a comprehensive counseling program that addresses academic, college and career, and personal/social development for all students. This position will develop and implement effective programs for all students while working in a supportive, professional environment.
Applicants must have a Master's Degree in School Counseling to be an eligible candidate for this vacancy.
Essential Duties:
Works collaboratively to develop and implement an effective school counseling program.
Collects, analyzes, and uses data to develop, implement, and evaluate the school counseling program
Conducts regular short-term, goal-oriented counseling sessions with students; collaborate with parents / guardians when appropriate.
Provides workshops for students, parents, and families
Uses evidence-based practices and research to inform decisions and programming that support the social-emotional wellness of all students.
Identifies the individual, classroom, and grade-wide social-emotional trends and needs of students, so as to design appropriate interventions and supports
Provides crisis intervention and emotional support to students during emergencies or challenging situations
Serves as a liaison between the school, families, and external mental health providers to ensure coordinated and comprehensive support.
Demonstrates knowledge of external mental health resources and offers referrals for students requiring specialized care.
Models an appreciation for student wellness and the connection between emotional health and intellectual wellbeing
Provides guidance and support to parents around adolescent development and issues related to mental health
Maintains detailed, confidential records of counseling sessions and communications with students, parents, and staff in compliance with ethical and legal standards.
Establishes positive relationships with colleagues, students, parents and community stakeholders that reflect recognition of and respect for every individual.
Takes all necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
Participates in the school’s extensive pre-service/in-service training and mentoring program.
Models non discriminatory practices in all activities.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
The ideal candidate:
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in School Counseling, Counseling Psychology, or Social Work.
Applicants must hold or be eligible for a Virginia license such as a School Counselor, Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) or another related counseling license issued by the appropriate Virginia board.
Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, parents and the community.
Must possess deep understanding and knowledge of adolescent development.
Must possess strong decision making skills.
Must show attention to detail.
Must demonstrate the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, set priorities, and meet deadlines.
Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills.
Must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
Must demonstrate knowledge of national, state, and local school counseling standards.
Must express a desire and willingness to grow professionally and work as part of a team.
Previous experience working with students with learning differences is preferred.
Salary Information: Salary is commensurate with experience.
