The CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies (SLU) was established in 2018 as the 25th self-standing school in The City University of New York system. It builds upon the work of the Joseph S. Murphy Institute, which has served the educational needs of working adults for nearly two decades. The School is dedicated to public service and social justice and has a three-part mission: 1) offer undergraduate and graduate programs in Labor and Urban Studies that better prepare current and future generations of labor and community leaders; 2) collaborate with other units of the University to expand educational opportunities for working adults while meeting the workforce development needs of New York City and State, and 3) serve the labor and broader community by conducting research, offering leadership development programs, hosting public forums and national conferences, and publishing a national journal to promote debate on issues critical to workers and working-class communities.
The School is seeking a chief academic officer who will advance SLU?s public service and social justice mission and oversee a wide range of areas including: curriculum and new academic initiatives, faculty development, student admissions and retention, academic advisement, student services, career counseling, experiential learning, library services, and instructional technology. The Associate Dean will also represent SLU in University-wide councils and will play a key role in the School?s strategic planning, evaluation, and re-accreditation process.
The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs reports to the Dean of the School and will:
? Oversee the School?s commitment to outstanding teaching, scholarship, and service by supporting faculty research and designing, planning, and implementing professional development opportunities for faculty including
? Work closely with the School?s governing bodies to further develop SLU?s academic policies and practices
? Work with faculty to develop new curriculum and submit curriculum proposals to the CUNY Board of Trustees and State Education Department
? Lead efforts to recruit, develop, and retain talented, diverse, and inclusive faculty (including appointment, re-appointment and tenure reviews)
? Work with department chairs to develop and coordinate course offerings, schedules and enrollment
? Ensure the development and support of high-quality academic programs, both in-person and online
? Expand existing and develop new programs and services to meet the needs of an urban and highly diverse student and faculty community
? Oversee the School?s student success efforts, including admissions, retention, academic advisement, tutoring, career services, internships and experiential learning
? Oversee the School?s enrollment management and develop innovative academic programming and academic partnerships
? Oversee the School?s institutional research unit to maximize institutional effectiveness and improve institutional outcomes
? Oversee instructional technology and library services
? Serve as the School?s academic integrity and discipline officer
? Communicate with students regarding academic matters
? Represent SLU on CUNY-wide academic matters and serve as academic liaison to the Graduate School and University Center (accreditation, joint faculty appointments, etc.)
? Establish a sense of community and trust with faculty, staff, and administrators
? Work with the Associate Dean of Operations to recommend improvements to programs and policies to the Dean
QUALIFICATIONS
This position is in CUNY?s Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a bachelor?s degree and eight years? related experience.
Preferred Qualifications and Experience:
? Ph.D. in a field related to Urban Studies or Labor Studies and eight years? related experience
? Demonstrated academic leadership
? Experience in program development, management, and evaluation
? Experience in admissions, advisement, and retention
? Excellent oral and written communications skills
? Experience in proposal-development and grant writing
? Experience in supervision within academic and unionized setting
? Knowledge of University structures and protocols

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Salary range is 160,000 - $200,000, commensurate with education and experience.

The CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies (SLU) offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Labor Studies and Urban Studies that are designed to meet the needs of working adults as well as traditional-age college students who seek to learn more about the challenges confronting poor and working class populations in the workplace and in the community. It also collaborates with other units of CUNY to offer a range of college-credit programs designed to give workers the academic and technical skills they need for professional advancement. Its faculty includes distinguished scholars in the social sciences as well as expert practitioners in government, labor, and public service. In addition to its academic programs, SLU sponsors research; organizes forums and conferences; and publishes a national journal, New Labor Forum: A journal of ideas, analysis, and debate.
