Mental health support for up to 100 students for up to 100 students
Five days per week/10 months per year, 8:30am– 3:30pm. Half days once per week over the summer.
At School One, we teach students to think, write, analyze, and create. As a community, we treat each other with care and respect. We appreciate each other’s differences as people and as learners. (Mission Statement)
School One is a college-preparatory high school in Providence for up to 100 students. Believing that students learn best when they feel safe, School One values collaboration and creativity over competition and rote memorization. Creativity is infused in classes across the curriculum. Students and families receive detailed written teacher comments at the end of each trimester; our transcript does not record letter grades. Each student has an academic advisor with whom they meet regularly. The advisor is also the liaison between home and school. Most of our students receive need-based financial aid. Informed by research about adolescent sleep patterns, our academic day begins at 9am.
The Counselor at School One is dedicated to helping students develop their intellectual, emotional, and social potential, while helping to reduce distress and promote emotional wellness. Duties include provision of ongoing assessment of students’ mental health needs, individual brief psychotherapy, crisis intervention, identifying goals for IEPs, consulting with faculty and staff about student mental health issues, consulting with parents/guardians, and assessing and providing referrals for mental health treatment outside of school. In addition, the counselor is expected to participate in school-wide activities, such as Farm Day, Fall Festival, the Art Show and Graduation. Please note that class placement and college counseling are not part of this position.
This position’s responsibilities include:
Provide on-going, as-needed support to individual students during time-limited sessions, usually arranged by appointment
Provide crisis de-escalation skills for ongoing support to students
Assist in oversight of the advising program, providing consultation to advisors on students’ needs

Work with school leaders to develop and implement programs to promote a respectful, engaging, safe school culture including involvement with School One’s disciplinary processes and safety planning
