We are currently seeking an Upper School Dean of Instruction for the 2025-2026 school year.
Position: Upper School Dean of Instruction and Professional Development Reports to: Head of Upper School FLSA Status: Exempt
Job Summary
The Upper School Dean of Instruction serves as a member of the Upper School Leadership Team. In partnership with the Head of Upper School and Associate Head of School for Teaching and Learning, the US Dean of Instruction and Professional Development serves as an instructional leader, innovator and support for teaching faculty. The US Dean of Instruction and Professional Development works to cultivate teacher capacity as related to Sacred Heart Greenwich teaching competencies through frequent cycles of classroom observations, feedback, co-planning and effective professional development. The US Dean of Instruction and Professional Development has a comprehensive understanding of teaching and learning and a willingness to explore and embrace new pedagogical practices. The US Dean of Instruction and Professional Development embraces the Goals and Criteria as the foundation of what we teach, how we teach it and how we interact with community members. The US Dean of Instruction and Professional Development embodies a growth mindset, nurtures this mindset in others and has a deep commitment to Sacred Heart Greenwich's efforts to educate to a deep respect for intellectual values (Goal II) and build community as a Christian Value (Goal IV).
Primary Job Responsibilities
Serve as a member of the Upper School Leadership Team (USLT)
Teach 1-2 sections in the Dean’s discipline/area of expertise and maintain a lab classroom for others to observe
Serve as department chair (if needed)
Work closely with teachers to support their instructional development through co-planning, frequent cycles of classroom observations and feedback, and targeted support aimed at identifying areas for growth to enhance student learning outcomes.
Collaborate with the Head of Upper School, Associate Head of School for Teaching & Learning, and Department Chairs to design and implement professional development opportunities that align with the Sacred Heart Greenwich teaching competencies. These opportunities may include workshops, training sessions, peer coaching, and classroom observations.
Collaborate with Head of Upper School, Associate Head of School for Teaching & Learning, Department Chairs, and Middle School Instructional Coach to engage in curricular review and to review and revise academic policies (ex: grading policy, blended classes)
Develop and lead new teacher institute in collaboration with Division Heads and Associate Head of School for Teaching & Learning
Collaborate with the USLT to review gradebooks, provide feedback and follow up with teachers when necessary
Collaborate with USLT to provide feedback on teacher comments
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:
Upholds SHG values as defined by the Goals and Criteria
Strong record of exemplary teaching performance and experience with instructional coaching that impacts teaching and learning
Experience leading teacher teams to implement instructional change that leads to improved student outcomes
Strong interpersonal skills, organizational skills and the ability to set clear expectations for teaching competencies as defined by SHG educators
At least five years of classroom teaching experience
Ability to work independently and manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously
Demonstrates a commitment to continuous professional growth
Bachelor’s degree is required, master’s degree is preferred
