Founded in 1786, Friends Seminary, the oldest continually operating coeducational, independent Quaker school in New York City, seeks applications for an enthusiastic and experienced Visual Arts teacher in the Middle and Upper School for a position beginning in Fall 2025. The ideal candidate possesses creative problem-solving skills, a sense of humor, enthusiasm for innovative curriculum, a positive attitude toward growth, and strong interpersonal skills that allow one to cooperate and collaborate effectively with others.
Responsibilities
Teach sections of grades 5-8 Visual Arts classes.
Teach Upper School Digital Photography.
Teach Upper School Film and Animation.
Teach Upper School Graphic Design.
Teach Upper School Yearbook class.
Collaborate with colleagues to develop curriculum that centers interdisciplinary projects, developmentally appropriate technological resources, and the social and emotional needs of middle school students.
Participate in the School community, including faculty and committee work, and school duties.
Attend faculty meetings and other planning meetings.
Serve as Upper School Advisor.
Prepare student reports which include narrative descriptions of students' achievements and needs.
Actively engage in anti-bias and equity work, understanding both culturally responsive pedagogy and the social justice dimensions of education.
Communicate respectfully with families and demonstrate sensitivity to cultures, values, configurations, and beliefs.
Qualifications
Experience and enthusiasm for teaching middle and high school students.
Knowledge of child development, best practices, and current trends in art education.
Strong experience in drawing and painting.
Experience working with 3D and mixed media.
Knowledge of working with digital software, including Adobe Creative Cloud and tablet-based applications like Procreate.
Full working knowledge of Canon DSLR Cameras.
Studio and materials management skills.
Creativity and innovation in both curriculum and instruction.
Versatility and flexibility both within and outside of the classroom, encouraging students to think creatively, work collaboratively, embrace failure, and communicate effectively with others.
Outstanding interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
Ability to differentiate instruction.

Candidates should possess strong content knowledge of Visual Arts both in Middle School and Upper School. The Visual Arts Department is committed to representing multiple cultures and narratives in its approach, and the successful candidate will enthusiastically embrace an inclusive approach to engaging students in the Visual Arts. In addition to their classroom and teaching responsibilities, Middle and Upper School teachers are assigned ancillary duties. Teachers are encouraged to participate in other aspects of the community.
Required Experience
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field required; master’s degree preferred.
3+ years of experience preferred.
Compensation
Annual salary range for 2025-2026 based on years of teaching experience and level of degrees earned: $82,000 - $164,000
