The Residence Director is a live-in employee who promotes and enhances a supportive community environment in his/her residence area which is conducive to academic achievement and personal growth.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Lives in, and is responsible for, the oversight, management, and operation of a first-year, traditional-style residential hall on campus.
Serves as a critical leader in fostering a campus culture in which differences are embraced and works to advance the College’s mission of diversity and inclusion.
Advises the campus-wide Residence Hall Association as well as individual residence hall Hall Council. Oversee campus-wide Hall Council recruitment, training, and engagement. Provide training, support, and oversight for all residential area Hall Council advisors.
Supervises 5 paraprofessional staff members in the residence hall. Provides continuous direction, support, and feedback through regular one-on-one meetings.
Maintains a strong presence in the residence hall, familiarizes self with the students in the hall, and shows concern for each resident’s welfare. Counsels and refers students to appropriate campus services.
Supervises the programming efforts of Resident Assistants in his/her residence hall and personally supports and attends these programs.
Manages the Pastoral Resident programs in the area.
Collaborates with Campus Ministry to support the student ministers and provide opportunities for faith development in the residence halls. Supports and promotes weekly Hall Mass.
Interprets and enforces college policies and participates in a formal professional staff on-call rotation.
Facilitates conduct meetings under the direction of the Community Standards office.
Oversees the physical maintenance of the residence area and communicates maintenance needs to Facilities Management.
Responsible for the opening and closing of the residence hall at the start and end of each break.
Assists with department staff recruitment & selection processes. This primarily includes Head Resident Assistants and Resident Assistants, but can also include Professional Staff and Special Interest Housing as requested.
Attends and participates in professional staff training & development. Assists with the facilitation and implementation as requested.
Assists with the communication, implementation, and management of the Housing Lottery & Selection process.
Serves on the college-wide Environmental Stewardship Committee and serves as the departmental leader regarding sustainability efforts.
Participates as a member of the College community in events and activities including Skyhawk Welcome Days, Student Engagement Programs, Convocation, Commencement Weekend, and Athletic events.
Enhances communication between the Residence Life department and other campus offices through regular interaction and formal interdepartmental meetings.
Participates in Residence Life weekly department meetings and individual supervisory meetings with the Assistant Director of Residence Life
Assists with both the annual and strategic planning of the Residence Life Office.
Performs a secondary assignment as determined by the central office staff.
Additional duties as assigned by the Director of Residence Life.
Education & Experience
A Bachelor’s degree is required, but a Master’s degree and the ability to transfer theory into practice is preferred. Previous experience within a residence hall setting. Crisis management, supervisory, community development, and programming experience are also a preference.
