The College of Engineering & Science is seeking a Pre-Health Program Coordinator and Advisor to develop, coordinate and implement infrastructure and programming to: support students interested in pursuing a professional health career, to improve and promote the program, to assist in marketing and recruiting, and to administer and expand affiliation agreements with professional programs at Detroit Mercy and other institutions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Pre-Health Advisor Duties
Provide early and on-going support and advising to students to increase students’ understanding of application process, timelines, and professional program expectations.
Ensure that the process for applying to medical and professional schools run efficiently and effectively for student applicants.
Provide recommendations on support/programming needed to improve students’ scores on MCAT/DAT, etc.
Year-round Individual & group advising for prospective students, current students (in and outside of the College of Engineering & Science) and alumni.
Career Workshop facilitation for Freshmen and New Students in Fall.
Prepare Individualized pre-health engagement plans with students.
Provide instruction for SCIE 2300.
Provide proactive outreach for pre-health student population urging active participation in required activities: clinical engagement, shadowing, community service and research.
Coach each committee letter student in application completion prior to faculty interview.
Career counseling for undecided and redirected students with change of pre-health plans.
Classroom visits as invited by faculty to share events/services as well as connect with pre-health students.
Pre-Health Coordinator Duties
Coordinate events and projects paying attention to the logistics and details.
Provide students guidance in developing their “personal brand” and their ability to articulate a consistent, reflective commitment to this career choice starting freshmen year. (Move students away from “check-boxing”).
Assist students with developing a quality personal statement based on competencies in alignment with the university mission.
Planning and hosting Information Sessions and events with external stakeholders collaborating with student organizations.
Compose reports on application data.
Facilitate SCIE 2400 Test Prep course.
Analyze application, enrollment data and industry trends to develop and direct resources.
Create digital resource library and in-office resources for students, Advisors, and Faculty, disseminate materials regularly.
Construct original content for website beyond accelerated programs.
Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
Education: college degree and a professional certificate or graduate degree; or 10 or more years of work experience in a related field.
Experience: Two years to five years (Equivalent combination of Education and Employment).
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree preferred.
Certification in Career Guidance preferred

Knowledge of best practices for supporting under-represented groups of best practices for academic advising in STEMM disciplines.

Ability to analyze, interpret and utilize data for recruiting and program improvement.

Monday – Friday, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm
