Reporting to the Deputy Head of School, the Director of Secondary School is a dynamic leader who drives academic and co-curricular excellence in the Secondary School (Middle and Senior divisions). This pivotal role requires a forward-thinking approach to shaping the student experience, strong operational expertise to manage daily functions seamlessly, and a proven ability to inspire faculty and staff toward achieving the school’s mission, vision and values. The Director of Secondary is a key member of the leadership team, fostering innovation, inclusivity, and collaboration to create a vibrant and supportive learning environment that prepares students for success in a rapidly changing world.
Key Responsibilities Include:
Leadership:
Provide leadership to foster a supportive and connected school community.
Promote and model the school’s mission, vision, and values in all practices and decisions.
Ensure the holistic development of students through academic, co-curricular, service and leadership programs.
Collaborate with the Leadership Team to develop and implement strategic priorities.
Lead and manage direct reports which include Middle and Secondary Faculty, Administrative Assistant, Secondary Counsellor, University Guidance Team and Whole School Receptionist.
Provide Supervision two Assistant Directors of Secondary School, ensuring alignment in leadership, discipline management and operations.
Academic Excellence:
Demonstrate strong instructional leadership with a comprehensive understanding of the BC Curriculum.
Ensure academic programs align with BC Curriculum standards and strategic priorities.
Collaborate with the Director of Curriculum and Heads of Department to design and implement robust curriculum pathways.
Oversee annual curriculum revisions to maintain relevance and compliance with educational standards.
Promote inquiry-based learning and innovative instructional practices.
Supervise faculty to maintain high standards in teaching and learning practices.
Lead coaching initiatives to enhance curriculum design, instructional methods, and assessment practices.
Facilitate faculty evaluations and provide opportunities for targeted professional development.
Empower collaborative learning teams to foster continuous improvement and shared expertise.
Oversee assessment, evaluation, and reporting practices to ensure consistency and alignment with best practices.
Support the effective communication of student progress to stakeholders.
Collaorate with divisions leads to ensure smooth transitions for students between grades.
Collaborate with Heads of Department and Academic Directors to ensure consistency across programs and shared strategic goals.
Plan and lead faculty and department head meetings to advance academic excellence and strategic objectives.
Actively contribute to academic department meetings to support cohesive program development.
Actively contribute to student progress meeting.
Operational Management:
Manage day-to-day operations of the Secondary School, ensuring adherence to policies and procedures.
Oversee scheduling and timetabling, ensuring a collaborative approach, timely delivery and alignment with academic goals.
Supervise the coordination of co-curricular programs, assemblies, and events.
Work with Heads of Department on budget planning and resource allocation.
Oversee the Student Code of Conduct and address discipline matters effectively.
Oversee the coordination of graduation activities and events.
Maintain communication with families, alumni, and external stakeholders.
Update and maintain school policies, handbooks, and documentation.
Student and Faculty Development:
Foster social-emotional development through effective programs and counseling support.
Work closely with the Student Learning Services department and the Secondary Counselor to promote academic, social and emotional development of students.
Lead and support faculty through mentoring, coaching, and collaboration.
Oversee the development of student leadership and service-learning opportunities.
Support recruitment, retention, and onboarding of faculty and students in collaboration with the leadership team.
Community Engagement:
Build and maintain relationships with parents, alumni, and the parent Saltus Association.
Represent the school at functions, events, and community outreach initiatives.
Liaise with external organizations to enhance student learning experiences.
Establish connections with other schools within Bermuda and BC network schools
Other Responsibilities:
Participate in the Risk Management Committee and Emergency Response Team.
Assist with hiring processes where required.
Ensure compliance with BC Ministry of Education requirements.
Work closely with the student information clerk and the University Guidance Counselors for accurate reporting related to student courses and credits.
Prepare reports and participate in leadership team meetings.
Perform of the role of a teacher within the Secondary School when required.
Minimum Qualifications, Experience and Skills:
Bachelor of Education.
A Master Degree in Education or equivalent is preferred.
Minimum of 10 years teaching experience and 5 years in a leadership role at the Secondary level.
Must be licensed or qualified to be licensed by the Bermuda Educators Council.
