Gustavus Adolphus College is a private liberal arts college in Saint Peter, Minnesota that prepares 2,000+ undergraduate students for lives of leadership, service, and lifelong learning. Gustavus was founded in 1862 and is the oldest Lutheran college in Minnesota. Fully accredited and known for its strong science, writing, music, athletics, and service-learning programs, Gustavus is also internationally recognized for its annual Nobel Conference. Applicants must be an experienced, ordained ELCA Lutheran leader who is able to communicate persuasively the Good News of God's work in Jesus Christ, especially to GenZ members of the community and is committed to ecumenical engagement and interreligious dialogue. A successful candidate will have experience in building collaborative partnerships to drive student focus and engagement; an authentic leader who instills trust; a spiritually inspiring worship planner and compelling preacher; a justice-minded advocate for the common good; and an emotionally intelligent wise companion for the community.
JOB SUMMARY:To steward the development of a community of belonging and vocational reflection where a mature understanding of Christian faith is inspired, lives of leadership and service are nourished, and life skills for Interfaith leadership and cooperation are obtained. Be the spiritual leader for the entire campus community-faculty, staff, and students by providing pastoral leadership for key college events, shepherding all student-facing Christian ministries and programs, developing the community capacity for deeper faith development and vocational reflection, and offering spiritual care and support to all members of the Gustavus community regardless of religious or non-religious identity.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:
Pastoral Leadership
Coordinate the planning of weekly Chapel Breaks, campus rituals, and other campus ceremonies
Serve as Artistic Director for Christmas in Christ Chapel
Provide theological leadership and planning for the Gustavus Academy for Faith, Science, and Ethics
Student Programs
Lead the Ministry of Word and Sacrament on campus
Persuasively communicate gospel-centered messages that address the life experiences of undergraduate college students
Supervise the Preaching Fellows Program
Support and develop the leadership team of United Christian Ministries
Drive collaboration and student engagement of the Office
Community and Vocation
Deepen the bonds of belonging and community across campus by utilizing weekly Chape Break times as a space for communal vocational reflection
Develop programming that helps students gain language around their own sense of vocation
Develop programming that equips students with a deeper understanding of their specific beliefs and values as well as skills for interfaith leadership for building community across religious difference
Advocate for Lutheran higher education
Offer pastoral care through weddings, baptisms, funerals, burials, and other special circumstances
Serve as a wise companion, advocate, and confidential resource especially for students
Administrative Responsibilities
Oversee the media/communication plans for the Office of the Chaplains
Collaboratively manage the ReServe system for space use of Christ Chapel and the Bonnier Multifaith Center
Be an active member and learner from the Chaplain cohort group of the Network of ELCA College and Universities (NECU) and the Association for Chaplaincy and Spiritual Life in Higher Education (ACHSLE)
Other duties as assigned
Prerequisites
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experienced, ordained ELCA Lutheran leader who is rostered in good standing
Demonstrated and thorough understanding of Lutheran theology, biblical narrative, and appreciation for the integration of faith and learning, and leading creative and innovative worship experiences
Strong relationship and trust building capacity, with demonstrated experience relating to college-age students and understanding of GenZ values and pastoral care concerns
Proven leadership and community building skills, with strong understanding and commitment to ecumenism and interfaith cooperation
Spiritual leader and compelling speaker who can persuasively communicate, preach, and teach
Justice-minded advocate, committed to advancing the work of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging through the lens of the Gospel
