The Weed Science Al-Khatib lab at the University of California Davis is seeking an assistant Junior Specialist to join the team starting February 15, 2025. The successful candidate will help on projects related to weed management in rice. The Junior Specialist will work closely with postdoc and graduate students, extension farm advisor, and growers to support research projects. The successful candidate will assist with 1) planting rice and collecting of field data, 2) layout field research plots, 3) conduct greenhouse testing of herbicide resistant weeds, 4) outreach activities to growers and the scientific communities 5) writing and presentation of results to scientific community and stakeholders and 6) lab management.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DESIGNATED AREAS OF EXPERTISE I. RESEARCH IN SPECIALIZED AREAS (85% EFFORT) Research activity (75%) A. Collaborate with postdoctoral scholars and graduate students affiliated with rice research activities involving layout and planting rice research plot, samples and monitor experiments, management of water in the field, prepare and apply herbicides in the field and greenhouse, collect and analyses data. Evaluation of performance in research activities or in outreach activities as deemed applicable to the individual project in specialized areas, as documented by any of the following: a. Candidate will actively be involved in reporting and publishable research activities b. Candidate will participate in discussions on research and the interpretation of research results c. The candidate will actively participate in appropriate co-authorship or acknowledgement in publications Lab Management (10%) B. Perform safe training of new students and volunteer C. Perform lab and equipment maintenance, and general lab organization II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (5% EFFORT) A. Attend seminars on topics related to fields of interest B. Participate in scientific discussions with peers to enhance confidence C. Participate in training programs to enhance knowledge and skills III. UNIVERSITY AND PUBLIC SERVICE (10% EFFORT) A. May maintain liaison and respond to the needs of stakeholders on issues related to area of expertise B. Plan and carry out outreach events to growers, extension farm advisors, and the University community and general public
Per UCD-APM 330, it is inappropriate to appoint an individual with a Master's or Doctoral degree in the relevant discipline or a baccalaureate degree plus three or more years of experience as a Junior Specialist. Candidates who hold a Masters or Doctoral degree will be disqualified from this search.
