The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking a FINANCIAL AID SPECIALIST II. The UAB Student Financial Aid Office is responsible for administering federal, state, and institutional programs to fulfill federal and state requirements. Financial Aid Specialists provide personal counseling, information and guidance to students and parents concerning financial assistance programs. Specialists also process updates and changes to the administered financial aid awards and disbursements according to student and program needs.
The Financial Aid Specialist II (FA Spec. II) serves as one of the senior Financial Aid Specialists and assists with training of new staff. Other examples of responsibilities include but are not limited to: participating as a member of the Financial Aid Appeals committee; coordinating and initially reviewing submitted appeals (SAP and/or Professional Judgement); problem-solving system data processing errors in Banner and Federal Student Aid systems; working closely with other offices to ensure adequate processing and monitoring of aid disbursements; processing Title IV adjustments such as returns; and administering/processing state funded aid.
This position will also serve on several financial aid committees and act as lead counselor and representation of other members of the financial aid team. Maintaining a current knowledge of federal regulations by attending regular training, conferences, and continuing communication with other aid professionals is required. This position may be required to attend various UAB events to represent the Student Financial Aid Office and other duties as assigned.
(Hourly Rate: $16.50 - $19.68)
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience are required. Work experience may NOT substitute for the education requirement. Candidates must have excellent customer services skills and the ability to multitask and prioritize, handling high-volume calls, emails, and chats, while continuing to be an on-the-floor resource for staff. Preference is given to those with at least two years progressive experience processing Federal Title IV financial aid in a higher education environment. Banner experience is a plus.
