Position Summary
The Deputy Director Student and Family Engagement leads a team of professionals who engage students and their families throughout the enrollment cycle.
The Director oversees: â¢The financial assistance counseling function that serves current and prospective students â¢On and off-campus financial aid presentations including support of financial literacy. â¢The development of on-campus, current student engagement events â¢SFS Service Center which includes 3 student-facing reports.
The Director serves as the lead when communicating on student issues with other campus departments, internal and external business partners, and others to ensure consistent and timely communication of any and all policy and procedure change.
The Deputy Director can lead SFS in the absence of, and can represent, the AVP & Director internally and externally as needed. The incumbent must be a skillful communicator who can build relationships with a wide range of internal and external partners.
As part of the AAA (Admissions, Aid, and Access) leadership team, the Director works closely with the AAA leadership and others from across the team to support goals of that team and of the AAA Team.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
Manage SFS Counseling Function
Provide leadership and direct supervision to professional staff of two senior assistant directors and one assistant director, as well as indirect supervision to two assistant directors focused on engagement with current and prospective students.
Engagements include:
On and off-campus presentations;
Evaluation of studentsâ™ financial assistance applications;
The use of âœprofessional judgmentâ to recommend adjustments to aid awards;
Direct interactions with students and family members regarding financial aid;
Strategies for paying for the familyâ™s portion of the cost of attending WashU;
The processing of university merit scholarships.
The Director will use data gathered independently and in collaboration with the analysis team to make informed, data-driven decisions.
Provide leadership and oversight to SFS service Center, including direct supervision of the Service Center Supervisor and indirect supervision to two SFS service representatives.
SFS Service Center assists students and parents with up-to-date, accurate, and complete information regarding financial aid and billing related questions and transactions, signing of documents, and scheduling appointments for Student Financial Services Counselors. Contacts may be in person, by phone, via email, or through other electronic means.
Ensure work of Service Center and counseling team support each other to most efficiently and effectively support students and families.
Work with campus partners to ensure SFS Service Center and counselors have current information to effectively serve students.
Work with offices across campus to ensure that the SFS team has current and timely information that allows SFS to efficiently and effectively answer student questions and share necessary information with students and their families. Campus partners include, Undergraduate Admissions, Student Transitions & Family Programs, Office of International Students and Scholars, the Overseas Office, the Office of Student Success, the Center for Career Engagement, among others.
Collaborate with enrollment unit communications team to support communications and presentation needs of SFS, including delivery of presentations to student, parents, and other audiences on and off campus, sometimes outside SFS business hours.
Ensure that financial aid related information presented by members of the AAA unit is accurate and is consistent with unit vision and standards.
Counseling Current and Prospective Students
Review financial assistance applications, create financial assistance awards for admitted and current students, and exercise âœprofessional judgmentâ in determining studentsâ™ need for financial assistance. Counsel students and/or their families to ensure students have the appropriate resources for financing their Washington University education. Document all contacts with each student and/or family during their undergraduate tenure at Washington University.

Salary Range
$75,200.00 - $128,800.00 / AnnuallyThe salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
