The Department of Health Sciences Education and Pathology is seeking a Pathologist to join our teaching faculty.
The primary focus for this position is teaching general and systems pathology in the Illinois Medicine Curriculum within the undergraduate medical education program. The curriculum integrates basic, clinical and social sciences throughout all phases. The phase 1 curriculum is an integrated block design in undergraduate medical years 1 and 2 with pathology taught throughout the blocks. Phase 2 and 3 are the clinical years with the opportunity to develop electives to further integrate the basic science in the clinical years.

The University of Illinois College of Medicine Peoria (UICOMP) educates 265 medical students and more than 300 physician residents and fellows annually. Additionally, it provides clinical care to more than 45,000 patients annually and conducts basic science, clinical and outcomes research. UICOMP is home to the Cancer Research Center, Center for Wellbeing, Center 4 Health Research and is a collaborator in Jump Simulation.

Position Summary

This individual will contribute to the education of medical students; engage in service opportunities to promote achievement of department, campus and college goals, and actively engage in the advancement of medical education research and/or scholarly activities.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Develop and deliver medical pathology and pathophysiology curriculum that incorporates clinically relevant principles using currently available technology, including educational modules, video, virtual reality, etc. to support the undergraduate medical curriculum.
• Employ multiple methods of pedagogy, including case-based instruction, large- and small-group discussion, lecture, demonstration, simulation, and team-based learning.
• Work collaboratively with faculty from other biomedical/clinical science departments and across UI COM campuses to implement curriculum, including course schedules, materials, and exams.
• Develop, review, and modify formative and summative assessments, including NBME style multiple choice questions.
• Engage in medical education scholarship.
• Serve on selected department, campus and college committees or taskforces as requested/assigned.
• Facilitate a minimum of 2-3 core cases for each curriculum block either in large or small group.
• Serve in academic leadership roles (Block Lead, Block Director, Course Director)
• Provide an exemplar professional, safe learning environment for medical students
• Serve as an academic faculty student advisor during phase 1
• Collaborating to develop phase 2 or phase 3(Clinical) electives and potential areas of integration into clinical rotations
• Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• MD/DO or its foreign equivalent
• Experience in medical education with evidence of strong educational effectiveness
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Collaborative team player with the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary setting
• A demonstrated commitment to fostering a professional, diverse and inclusive learning environment

Preferred Qualifications

• American Board of Pathology board eligible/board certified
  
• Demonstrated excellence in medical education
  
• Experience in the development and delivery of curricular materials
  
• Previous experience with administrative responsibilities in an educational or clinical setting.
  
• A record of scholarly activity in the area of pathology (and/or) medical education
