The ASHP-accredited PGY1 residency program at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital (formerly known as Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak Hospital) has been training pharmacy residents since 1977. Each year, the program accepts six traditional PGY1 residents into the program with the goal of developing the residents into confident and competent practitioners. There are 8 required learning experiences (Orientation, Ambulatory Care, Critical Care, Drug Information, Integrated Practice Experience, Internal Medicine, Practice Management and Research) with numerous elective and selective rotations available to be chosen by the resident. The Integrated Practice Experience is a novel rotation where the resident is immersed within the unit-based pharmacist practice model. An in-house, on-call program aids the resident in developing clinical confidence and autonomy while participating in code response, inpatient tenecteplase administration for stroke, complex patient-specific drug information questions, supratherapeutic toxicology level evaluation and antimicrobial stewardship activities. The Ambulatory Care experience focuses on anticoagulation and Discharge/Transitions of Care clinic, and may include exposure to diabetes, Hepatitis C, and HIV clinics. Additionally, the residents serve as student preceptors throughout the year through various opportunities. A chief resident position, resident chair positions, advisor program, leadership development program and optional participation in the Wayne State University Teaching and Learning Curriculum are available.
