The compensation for this position is $5,547-$5,900/month (non-negotiable), plus a full benefits package.
Candidates must reside in the state of California and within a commutable distance to San Diego State University upon the time of hire.
The newly-funded San Diego State University/San Diego State University-Imperial Valley Prevention Research Center (PRC) aims to reduce the health effects of extreme heat in Imperial County communities that are most impacted. Organized into administrative, research, and network components, the center will build infrastructure and partnerships to support a research project using implementation science methods with evidence-based interventions to adapt a Heat Action Plan in Imperial Valley.
The PRC is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and is part of a national network of academic research centers that study how people and their communities can reduce the risks for chronic illnesses.
We are seeking a highly motivated candidate to serve as the PRC Communication, Dissemination and Translation Lead. With supervision from the PRC Deputy Director and in close collaboration with PRC faculty, the incumbent will support the PRC's effort to engage with diverse impacted communities throughout Imperial County to understand community needs around extreme heat mitigation, and to implement a Heat Action Plan in the region.
The incumbent will build, sustain and grow relationships with community representatives, partner agencies, and research teams in order to ensure community engagement in completing the scope of work. Additionally, the incumbent will be responsible for the development and implementation of outreach and communication strategies across multiple sectors, in order to put best practices into place.
The PRC is based in Imperial Valley, CA, with a central office location in Calexico. This is a hybrid position that allows for remote work and also requires significant travel throughout Imperial County. The incumbent must be willing and able to travel regularly to Calexico and throughout Imperial County.
Responsibilities COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT 40%
The incumbent will coordinate efforts to build, sustain, and grow relationships with community partners across multiple sectors in Imperial County. The position requires collaboration with these partners, as well as PRC investigators, staff, and students.
The incumbent will also collaborate with partners and the PRC team to identify and work with appropriate venues for community meetings, forums, focus groups, etc.
They will be expected to participate in internal and external meetings and committees, following up with committee members as needed to complete the scope of work. They will work closely with the PRC's Community Advisory Board.
The incumbent will serve as a primary point of contact for community partners. They will be expected to maintain positive and productive professional relationships with diverse community representatives and organizations and researchers, bringing any concerns or questions to the attention of project leads.
The candidate will report to the co-investigative team on the status of engagement strategies and lead meetings with the research team, consultants, partner sites, and advisors to facilitate cross-disciplinary learning.
COMMUNICATING FINDINGS AND BEST PRACTICES 30%
The incumbent will take a lead staff role in developing a strategy to share best practices, policies and toolkits to put into practice the heat mitigation strategies developed by the PRC.
The incumbent will adapt project findings and toolkits to local community and academic partners, and broadly across the PRC network and beyond using the SDSU PRC website and national collaborations.
They will be responsible for developing and maintaining communication tools such as the PRC website, newsletter, and social media strategies.
Supervised by PRC faculty, they will participate in research activities including the development of data collection materials, recruitment of research participants, data collection, and analysis.
DATA COLLECTION SUPPORT 10%
The incumbent will work with PRC research leadership as needed to support the rollout of the research project. They will review, guide, and edit recruitment and data collection strategies and documents as requested, maintaining focus on community relevance and appropriateness.
RESEARCH ASSISTANT / STUDENT COORDINATION AND SUPERVISION 10%
With the support and oversight of the Deputy Director, the incumbent will coordinate and assign work for research assistants/ students assigned to dissemination and communication tasks. They will delegate tasks, be responsible for student/research staff adherence to their tasks, and monitor student/research staff schedules. They will inform the Deputy Director of any training or resource needs to facilitate student and research staff, and will coordinate with the Deputy Director to ensure that students and research staff are trained and prepared to carry out their tasks.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES AS ASSIGNED 10%
Qualifications MINIMUM EDUCATION:
Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in appropriate field related to program/project, or additional experience may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE:
2-years of progressively responsible experience in technical or administrative assignments.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Masters degree in Public Health or a related health and/or social sciences field
At least 2 years' experience in community-based research or outreach, particularly in Imperial County
Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred
