We are pleased to announce a national search for the Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life at Carnegie Mellon University. The newly-formed Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life is one of over 20 departments within the Division of Student Affairs, and housed under the Community Life unit alongside Residential Education, First-Year Orientation, and Family Engagement.
This new role provides comprehensive leadership and support to the fraternity and sorority community, fostering a community that values academic excellence, leadership development, service, and
inclusivity. The Director will oversee program direction, staff management, budget administration, and policy development, ensuring alignment with university goals and student development best practices.
Reporting to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Director of First-Year Orientation & Family Engagement, the Director will provide leadership and oversight of CMU's fraternity and sorority community, comprising 4 governing councils, 19 national organizations, and over 1,100 members. Supervising two full-time coordinators, the Director will also work in close partnership with Residential Education and Housing Services to cultivate the residential experience of fraternity and sorority members living in university-owned chapter housing.
Your core responsibilities will include:
Facilitating implementation of the fraternity and sorority strategic plan and providing visionary leadership to the CMU fraternity and sorority community, members, and staff.
Developing and implementing both short- and long-term departmental standard operating procedures and policies, in alignment with university and divisional priorities and policies
Leading the professional staff, students, volunteers and other stakeholders in developing and executing a community growth strategy, including chapter member recruitment and retention, and new chapter expansion and extension
Working collaboratively with campus partners to develop and implement a harm reduction strategy, setting strategic priorities focused on risk reduction, prevention and education
Providing direction and support for two professional staff members, including consultation for chapter and council advising, as well as department programming and educational initiatives
Advising a portfolio of fraternity and sorority chapter(s) through a chapter coaching model, to be determined by strengths and experiences of the departmental team
Cultivating trust and building meaningful, genuine relationships with sorority and fraternity members, and chapter and council leaders, campus partners, alumni, chapter advisors, national headquarters and other invested collaborators
Partnering with Student Affairs Marketing and University Communications and Marketing to develop a comprehensive communication strategy for both internal and external constituencies
Providing emergency response and management in the event of urgent student situations or issues with broad community impact
Developing and managing departmental budget and collaborating with Associate Dean to grow resource allocation from University and other sources
Other duties as assigned
The Director has the opportunity to live in single family, university-provided housing at no cost. This private house is located in close proximity to campus and includes parking. Housing is contingent upon agreement to serve in the campus-wide emergency response rotation.

Required Qualifications:
Master's degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, or related field required
5 years of experience working in higher education, fraternity/sorority headquarters, and/or equivalent field required; 7+ years of experience equivalent experience preferred
A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is proven may be considered.

Work Posture: This position is operating in-person with opportunity for flexible work arrangements.
Typical Work Schedule: Monday-Friday from 8:30-5:00 pm. An alternate work schedule allowing for evening and weekend hours will be required on occasion.
