The Assistant Dean II position is responsible for all transfer activities for undergraduate students at the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences This position is responsible for compliance with the legislation of the NJ Statewide Transfer Agreement, both in its review and certification of the NJSWTA compliance for students and in oversight of course equivalency and Recommended Transfer Programs (RTPs). The Transfer Assistant Dean coordinates with the SEBS Assistant Dean of Recruitment and counselors at other institutions to create effective recruitment programming to ensure smooth student transition and evaluation of programs.
The Assistant Dean position is critical to welcoming students into our beloved community through a detailed and understandable process which educates students about their progress to timely degree completion and the institutional policies, opportunities, and resources that are key to a successful transition. To support transfer student success, the Assistant Dean remains current on national and international trends affecting recruitment, transition, and retention for diverse transfer populations, and works with national transfer student organizations and across Rutgers to develop transfer student success initiatives. Further, the Assistant Dean collaborates with the SEBS Office of Global Engagement to coordinate International transfer student recruitment, development of combined degree programs, and effective recruitment, course evaluation and approval for Study Abroad programming for SEBS students. Oversees evaluation of transfer coursework for continuing students and assists the Dean, Associate Dean, and faculty advisors in the development of specialty programs/articulation agreements connected to the SEBS and NJAES mission.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
Creates, implements, and provides leadership for all transition processes and onboarding, including advising, registration activities, coordination of faculty advisors, and decision-making about institutional policies of new transfer students as well as the oversight and evaluation of continuing students seeking to take courses outside the University.
Oversees the transfer credit evaluation process for all newly-admitted transfer students. Ensure that credits are granted in a timely and accurate manner within the parameter of the NJ Statewide Transfer Agreement and in consultation with faculty members across the disciplines at SEBS and across the university.
Sets direction for the long term improvement of transfer evaluation process.
Creates and implements large scale transfer advising and registration programs for fall and spring admits.
Provides leadership and direction in the planning, execution and assessment of these events, including training and supporting faculty advisors, and responding effectively to all inquiries regarding the needs of new transfer students.
Oversees planning and implementation for programming and intervention efforts to support transfer student transition, success, and progress to timely graduation.
Develops innovative efforts and partnerships within the SEBS community across the university, and within the broader professional community to support transfer student success.
Serves as a member of the Dean's staff in the Office of Academic Programs to support all office-wide tasks for the SEBS general student population, including providing individual and group advising, managing an advising caseload of first-year students, participating in all large scale academic programming including APA Day, STAR Day, graduation certification.
Delays drop/probation advising and other administrative duties including serving on school and university committees as assigned.
Represents the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences on all tasks related to NJ Statewide Transfer initiatives; including the upkeep and oversight of NJ Transfer courses and Recommended Transfer Programs (RTPs); prepare reports for compliance; serve as a liaison to advisors at the NJCC and cultivate connections to and effective advising for students transferring to SEBS; provide oversight for certification of all NJSWTA students. Participate in all university-wide transfer programs, including those coordinated by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, and participation in quarterly conference calls with the President's Council on Transfer Students.
Assists in office planning and oversight for two transfer-related processes: 1) review and evaluation of Transfer Course Preapprovals for continuing SEBS students seeking to take classes outside Rutgers and 2) review, admissions decisions, and onboarding of School-to-School (internal Rutgers) transfer students.
Works in coordination with the Assistant Dean of Recruitment and the Associate Dean to design effective and innovative transfer student recruitment activities to align with SEBS- and University-priorities. Recruitment activities include the design and implementation of an annual NJCC Counselors program and presentations for Transfer Students at all large-scale Rutgers recruitment events
Minimum Education and Experience:
Requires a Master's degree and a minimum of 3 years overall professional experience in Higher Education.
