Norfolk, VA - Eastern Virginia Medical School at Old Dominion University seeks a dynamic, distinguished executive to serve as its next Dean. This is a unique opportunity to lead a well-established medical school with a tradition of excellence into a new era, with the recent integration of Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) into Old Dominion University (ODU), a large, urban, public research institution. The ideal candidate will be a collaborative academic physician who will work closely with leadership of the Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences and the university, as well as with health systems, department chairs, faculty, staff, graduate medical trainees, students, and alumni.
Grown from the recognition of the need for a medical school within coastal Virginia by a group of civic leaders, EVMS admitted its first students in 1973. Over the next 50 years, the school's reputation for academic excellence grew, providing large numbers of graduates to serve the region. Its prominence in health professions education, community service, and clinical firsts, including the first child conceived by in-vitro fertilization in the United States in 1981, has set the stage for the next era, one which will be marked by collaboration and continued growth as part of a historic university, Old Dominion, also located in Norfolk. Situated within the Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences Center, EVMS at ODU will have opportunities for collaboration with the other four colleges and schools within the Center: Ellmer College of Health Sciences, Ellmer School of Nursing, EVMS School of Health Professions, and the Joint School of Public Health.
The integration, effective on July 1, 2024, resulted in an approximate $30M increase of state support to the institution and establishes the Commonwealth of Virginia's most complex and largest academic health sciences center with 56 academic programs, some of which are unique programs not offered elsewhere in the state. A powerful partnership with Sentara Health is a cornerstone of the EVMS at ODU integration with a long-term commitment to provide approximately $350 million in dedicated funding over the next decade. Sentara Health, an integrated, not-for-profit health care delivery system, celebrates more than 130 years in pursuit of its mission - "we improve health every day." Sentara is one of the largest health systems in the U.S. Mid-Atlantic and Southeast, and among the top 20 largest not-for-profit integrated health systems in the country, with 30,000 employees, 12 hospitals in Virginia and Northeastern North Carolina, and the Sentara Health Plans division which serves more than 1 million members in Virginia and Florida.
The Norfolk region is in the center of beautiful coastal Virginia, with access to numerous outdoor activities as well as cultural amenities within the metropolitan region of 1.7 million people known as Hampton Roads, consisting of Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Hampton, and Newport News. With nearby historical attractions and an important naval/military hub, the region provides a diverse setting offering a high quality of life.
Reporting to the Executive Vice President for Health Sciences, Alfred Abuhamad, M.D., the dean serves as the chief academic and administrative officer of the school and is responsible for all educational, research and clinical endeavors. As such, he/she will also serve as Board Chair for the EVMS Medical Group.
The ideal candidate for the position of the new dean should be a collaborative bridge-builder, an outstanding listener, and a seasoned communicator. The ability to build trust and rapport, not only with faculty, staff and students, but also with university colleagues and collaborating health systems, will be paramount. Because of the community-based nature of EVMS and ODU, EVMS at ODU values community engagement, and the next dean should embody a commitment to community service. The capacity to engage donors, superlative management/financial acumen, and a proven track record in successful recruitment of faculty and non-faculty leaders, is essential.
Qualified candidates will possess an M.D., M.D./PhD, or an equivalent medical degree, board certification in the candidate's specialty/discipline by a member board of the American Board of Medical Specialties, and academic credentials that will warrant appointment as a full professor.
Confidential review of applications, nominations and expressions of interest will begin immediately and will continue until an appointment is made.
