DESCRIPTION
A key staff member of the Triton Transfer Hub (TTH), the Transfer Retention Specialist works collaboratively with the Assistant Director of the Triton Transfer Hub to provide and coordinate student success services, programs, and events for the unique needs of incoming and continuing transfer students at UC San Diego.
The Transfer Retention Specialist participates in the development, coordination, and implementation of a limited range of programmatic activities that strive to provide academic, professional, and social support services for transfer students. Additionally, the Transfer Retention Specialist targets services for students to explore academic fields of interest and connect them with existing campus resources providing curricular and co-curricular support. The Transfer Retention Specialist also uses proactive and strength-based approaches to provide personalized individual and group support to help transfer students holistically succeed at the university.
The Transfer Retention Specialist proactively outreaches to and supports students who are experiencing academic difficulty, both individually and in groups. The position works individually with incoming and continuing students to facilitate student success, persistence, and campus integration through targeted outreach, coaching, and mentoring. The Transfer Retention Specialists also directs students to campus and community resources that enhance academic or college success. This position serves as a liaison to services and resources on campus and works in direct collaboration with campus partners to provide support that align with students needs.
Additionally, the Transfer Retention Specialist participates in the development, coordination, and facilitation of workshops or other interventions such as, but not limited to, tutoring that support transfer student academic achievement, advises and develops students' awareness, and adoption of learning or college success strategies. The position provides consultations or facilitates training on transfer student success topics to diverse audiences including students and campus and community partners. The Transfer Retention Specialist also trains, provides work direction, and supports the professional development of student employees, including transfer peer coaches.
The Transfer Retention Specialist mentors, advises, supports students leaders and members of the UC San Diego Tau Sigma Chapter - a national honor society for transfer students. Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of the Triton Transfer Hub, this position also serves as a lead (at times) on special projects and committees which support the mission, vision, and programmatic goals of the Triton Transfer Hub.

QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training. Master's degree and at least 1 to 2 years of progressive professional experience or equivalent are preferred.
Demonstrated skill and ability to develop and provide guidance and advice on academic issues including supporting students in the development of academic or learning strategies, particularly transfer students.
Knowledge of strategies in critical thinking, reading, writing, note taking, test taking, time management, and goal setting.
Demonstrated ability to develop workshops or resources related to improving learning and study strategies.
Demonstrated ability to provide work direction and mentoring for student staff to ensure their own personal development and growth by creating learning outcomes and goals for projects they are assigned, including the ability to provide in-service training.
Skills in judgment and decision-making. Ability to establish objectives, set priorities, and work with others in support of departmental objectives and goals.
Demonstrated organizational planning and time management skills. Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities. Ability to plan, implement, and assess programming and events.
Develops knowledge of specific learning theory, learning styles, affective issues, academic issues, and socio-cultural issues in applying academic support for students. Focus on transfer students is preferred.
