Seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Nurse Practitioner to join our Pediatric Genetics team. In this role, you will be responsible for conducting follow-up visits for newborns screening positive for an inborn error of metabolism (IEM) via newborn screening through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and provide longitudinal follow-up for patients diagnosed with IEMs. Your expertise and dedication will play a vital role in ensuring the well-being of patients followed by Pediatric Genetics and advancing the development of treatments for rare diseases. The ideal candidate will possess strong clinical skills, excellent communication abilities, and a passion for providing high-quality care to patients.
Newborn Screening Follow-up:
Collaborate and communicate with other healthcare providers, including pediatricians and medical geneticists, to ensure timely and appropriate follow-up for infants with positive newborn screening results concerning for inborn errors of metabolism.
Conduct comprehensive assessments, physical examinations, and diagnostic tests for newborns identified through newborn screening and conduct regular follow-up evaluations in biochemical genetics clinic.
Assess the health and development of newborns, ensuring timely intervention if any concerns are identified.
Provide education and guidance to parents or guardians regarding the screening results, potential health conditions, necessary interventions, and available support resources.
Collaborate with the healthcare team to coordinate referrals and follow-up care for newborns requiring specialized services.
Maintain effective communication with multidisciplinary teams (including MDHHS), including attending team meetings, sharing patient updates, and participating in case discussions.
Assist with preparation of individualized patient and annual reports, summaries, and other findings related to newborn screening follow-up to MDHHS.
Patient Care and Support:
Conduct physical examinations, collect medical histories, and review diagnoses in patients diagnosed with inborn errors of metabolism as part of a multidisciplinary metabolic clinic.
Develop and implement appropriate treatment plans for patients with metabolic disorders in collaboration with the healthcare team (metabolic physician, metabolic dietician, genetics nurse, genetic counselors, and social work).
Prescribe medications, order diagnostic tests, and interpret test results as necessary.
Offer counseling, support, and education to patients and their families regarding healthcare management, disease prevention, treatment options, and available resources.
Ensure accurate and timely documentation of patient encounters, treatments, and other relevant information in electronic health records.

Stay updated with the latest developments in rare diseases, newborn screening, and clinical trial research through continuous learning and participation in relevant educational opportunities.
Collaborate with other healthcare professionals, researchers, and industry partners to advance knowledge and improve patient outcomes.
Foster a culture of teamwork, communication, and professional growth by actively participating in departmental meetings, case conferences, and research forums.
Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan.
Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).
Current specialty certification to practice as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP-AC or PNP-PC) or Family Nurse Practitioner
Current DEA registration required
AHA approved BLS
Minimum of 2 years of clinical experience as a nurse practitioner in pediatrics
One (1) or more years of clinical nursing experience with genetics and metabolism
NOTE: *employment is contingent upon successful completion of the credentialing and privileging process.
