Develops and implements programs to support safe and compliant use of chemicals for research, teaching and facility employees.
Identifies potential gaps in compliance with University, state and federal regulations for University hazardous materials use and storage.
Assists in managing the operational activities of the Chemical Hygiene Team, including: data and records retention, audit of engineering controls, industrial hygiene consultations and enforcement of the University’s Chemical Hygiene Plan.
Prepares reports for internal and external stakeholders that identify potential safety gaps and recommend remediation options to improve chemical safety compliance.
Serves and an on-call technical advisor for after-hours hazardous materials incidents.
Promotes a positive, University-wide culture of safety collaboration by actively engaging and maintaining professional relationships with key personnel at all levels of the University hierarchy.
Minimum requirements:
4-year degree (or knowledge equivalent) in industrial hygiene, environmental health, public health or hazardous materials management
3-5 years of progressively complex and independent work in industrial hygiene, fire and life safety code interpretation
Demonstrated experience in working collaboratively in a diverse workforce
Current 40-hour HAZWOPER certification (or ability to obtain within 6 months)
Ability to be fitted and wear a half-or full-face respirator and self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
Minimum Requirements
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in industrial hygiene, environmental health and safety, chemistry, biochemistry or a closely related field; three to five years related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in industrial hygiene, occupational health/safety and chemical safety; or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and certification or eligibility to be certified in the comprehensive practice of industrial hygiene.
Desired Qualifications
Experience as a safety professional in a higher education setting.
Professional certifications such as Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Hazardous Materials Manager, Certified Safety Professional or equivalent.
