Department Summary
The Life Sciences Core Education Department is the result of a cooperative effort by faculty, staff, and students from all life science departments to provide a uniform and integrated set of courses during the first years as an undergraduate. With total undergraduate enrollments exceeding 20,000 students annually, the Life Sciences Core Education Department is responsible for providing required pre-major coursework for students in the Life Sciences, Social Sciences, Physical Sciences, School of Nursing, School of Engineering (Bioengineering), and the undergraduate majors in the School of Public Health. The department also provides optional major and/or General Education Coursework to all undergraduates in the College of Letters and Sciences, and the Schools of Music, Arts and Architecture, Theater, Film, and Television, Public Affairs, and Education. Together with CEILS, (which is administratively housed within the LS Core), the LS Core is comprised of 24 full-time employees, in addition to annually employing 300+ graduate teaching assistants, 70+ readers, 200 learning assistants, and 40 instructors. Position Summary
Under the direction of the Chief Administrative Officer, and in collaboration with the Director of Student and Instructional Services, the Student Academic Advisor 2 manages the undergraduate student and academic programs within the Life Sciences Core Curriculum Program (LSCC). Key responsibilities entail providing academic advising to students, overseeing the course articulation process, managing and tracking course enrollment and trends, and providing instructional planning and administrative support to departmental staff, teaching assistants and instructors. The incumbent exercises a high degree of independence, initiative and discretion in carrying out duties.

1. Knowledge of campus enrollment policies, computing systems and procedures. (Preferred)
2. Knowledge of UCLA system software: OASIS, MyUCLA, BruinLearn, Counselor Desktop (Preferred)
3. Knowledge of hiring procedures and policies for Academic Student Employees. (Preferred)
4. Superior skill in working independently and following through on assignments with minimal direction, as well as working as part of a team and collaborating with colleagues. (Required)
5. Communication skills to convey information accurately, clearly and concisely to the public, applicants, faculty and other University offices regarding the undergraduate programs. (Required)
6. Knowledge of general academic requirements and regulations for undergraduate UCLA students. (Preferred)
7. Demonstrated knowledge of course content in the life sciences. (Preferred)
8. Ability to correctly advise undergraduate students on the full range of academic questions. (Required)
9. Skill in prioritizing assignments to complete work in a timely manner when there are changes in a workload, changes in assignment, pressures of deadlines, competing requirements, frequent interruptions and heavy workload. (Required)
10. Knowledge of confidentiality policies and ability to handle sensitive matters appropriately. Superior skill in interacting with persons of various social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds for the purpose of advising students and working with faculty, staff and graduate students. (Required)
11. Skill in analyzing information, problems, situations, practices or procedures. (Required)
12. Skill in employing fundamental counseling techniques with sensitivity. Skill in listening perceptively. (Required)
