Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at Iowa State University seeks a Professor and Associate Dean for Global Engagement to lead the Office for Global Engagement. The successful candidate must be a visionary leader with a demonstrated capacity to promote international teaching, research, Extension/outreach and service programs in collaboration with campus leaders from across all disciplines in the college. The successful candidate will support and engage with faculty on new and innovative projects with globally engaged partners from academia, industry, NGOs and government.
The Associate Dean will serve as the Director for the CALS Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods (CSRL) as it begins its third decade in CALS and operations in eastern Uganda. The CSRL Director provides overall leadership for a) rural development programs involving nutrition, crops, livestock, post-harvest handling, school improvement, drinking water/hygiene and income generation, b) the13-acre ISU satellite campus in Uganda, c) partner relations including with universities in Uganda, and other organizations and agencies, d) service learning involving students from ISU and other universities, e) a team of six ISU-based Associate Directors and approximately 50 staff members based in Kamuli, Uganda, and f) key fund raising and donor stewardship.This role requires several trips each year to Uganda to provide oversight and to maintain vibrant partner relations. It also involves US and Uganda travel for purposes of donor stewardship.
In collaboration with the Office for Academic Innovation, the Associate Dean for Global Engagement will provide key linkages to the college-wide academic major, Global Resource Systems. GRS provides students with a global perspective and international internships in countries throughout the world.
The Associate Dean will oversee the Office for Global Engagement. With a current staff of seven the Office of Global Engagement enables more than 400 students each year to travel and study both abroad and domestically with a goal to increase participation. The Office works closely with a wide array of globally oriented public and private organizations and NGOs worldwide, including in Iowa. Annual fundraising and grant-getting in the international context for the college often surpasses $10 million a year, and several of the global programs are substantially supported by endowments.
The Associate Dean will manage the Fork in the Road (FITR) Station, a CALS residential satellite campus located in St John, US Virgin Islands. With a full-time faculty member/manager onsite, FITR provides opportunities for undergraduate, graduate and faculty research, and service learning. The Associate Dean will provide leadership for FITR programing, including EARTH which aims to educate ISU students through high-impact educational activities at FITR in the USVI, and elsewhere.
The Associate Dean is supported by very experienced staff members in CSRL, in the Office for Global Engagement, in Uganda, and in the ISU Foundation. The Associate Dean is also supported by a dedicated team of CSRL associate directors who share the workload in managing a successful program in Uganda. As part of the Deans leadership team, the Associate Dean will engage frequently with academic department chairs and faculty, and the college offices for Academic Innovation, Research and Discovery, Facilities and Operations, Extension and Outreach, and Personnel and Finance, and with partners in other colleges.

Required Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. or equivalent in a discipline relevant to the college;
Scholarly accomplishments that qualify for tenure at the rank of Professor in a CALS academic department by time of application;
Significant international experience;
Program development experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
To show evidence of demonstrated leadership in the following:
Organizational budget/fiscal management of an academic department, college or university-level unit;
Personnel management, including recruitment, advancement and retention of faculty and staff;
Advancing teaching, undergraduate and graduate program planning and development, and student success;
Advancing research enterprises and collaborations, and research experience relevant to the CALS mission in an international context;
Advancing Extension, outreach and service enterprises and collaborations;
Working with external stakeholders and donors;
Building and expanding partnerships, and coalitions with public and private sector organizations.
Position Details:
The Associate Dean appointment is five years and is renewable with a formal review during year four. The expected effort will be 90% administrative and 10% contributions to teaching, research, outreach and/or service. This appointment serves at the pleasure of the Dean. The person in this position will hold a tenured faculty position in an academic department in the college with a 12-month appointment, reverting to a 9-month faculty position when the administrative appointment ends.
