NYU Stern Experiential Learning provides MBA students with opportunities to develop skills through real-world experiences. Through Stern Signature Projects, we offer project-based learning with the goal of a) providing qualified MBA students with a rewarding strategic consulting experience, b) introducing students to the challenges and dynamic forces impacting an organization's strategies in an international market, and c) providing clients with valuable strategic consulting advice. These projects are aimed at expanding the depth and breadth of business opportunities for selected firms in local markets and/or the U.S.
Student teams of 4-5 are paired with an individual project advisor with relevant expertise in the project scope or industry for a semester long project engagement. Advisors are to personally meet with their teams face-to-face for at least one hour every week throughout the semester. In addition, there will be times where more frequent interaction and feedback is necessary as teams approach key milestones in the program (e.g. submitting their final report). This is not a typical faculty role as there is minimal in-class presenting and lecturing. There is a maximum emphasis on mentoring, guidance, feedback, and counseling.
Role of project advisor:
Subject matter expert: Help students gain an understanding of the specific subject and research related to your area of expertise.
Advise
Mentor the team as it performs research, analyzes data, and develops appropriate strategic recommendations.
Encourage the students to dig deeper into their research, analysis, ideas, etc. Students often need push-back and constructive criticism typically leads to better ideas and recommendations.
Guide the students through the project management and process aspect of the consulting engagement. It is particularly important to help the students structure the problem and finalize scope early on. In general, the concept of "challenge and support" – ie let the students work with a challenge and support them through the solution- is SSP's preferred approach.
Ongoing engagement: Meet with the students weekly to answer questions and provide extra support if needed. Provide ongoing written and verbal feedback throughout the semester. An engaged, committed faculty member is one of the most crucial factors for success and student learning.
Share knowledge: Provide the student team with pertinent reading or background information on the project prior to your kick-off meeting and throughout the semester; so students can be as prepared as possible.
Evaluation/Grading: You will be responsible for evaluating the students on their academic work and reflection assignments throughout the semester. This grade should be submitted to the Experiential learning program manager. Students should be assessed on an individual basis and all team members need not receive the same grade.
In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the rate for this advisement position is $3,000 per student team.
Advisor Qualifications: We are looking for advisors with an MBA and consulting experience.
Please include your resume, cover letter and list of 3 references.
