The Division of Undergraduate Education (UE) is a complex organization comprised of the UE divisional offices (immediate office, Academic and Staff Human Resources, and Planning and Resource Management), Campus Advising Coordination, Summer Session, Office of the Registrar, Colleges Academic (Cowell, Stevenson, Crown, Merrill, Kresge, Oakes, Porter, College 9, John R. Lewis and Rachel Carson College), Enrollment Management (Undergraduate Admissions, Orientation Programs, and Financial Aid), and the Educational Partnership Center (EPC General, EAOP, K-12 Regional Alliances, Research & Evaluation, COSMOS, MESA, CAL-SOAP, CRLP, and GEAR-UP). The division is responsible for over 300 staff and student FTE, and over 100 academic appointments, each one of whom helps students to be successful.
Under the direction of the Assistant Vice Provost and Chief of Staff and working closely with the Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education and Global Engagement, the Director of Academic Integrity will create, launch and manage a new UCSC Academic Integrity Office. The director will serve as the chief campus expert on issues related to academic integrity. The director is responsible for formulating operational and strategic planning for the office, developing and overseeing the operating budget, overseeing the implementation of UCSC's policy on academic conduct, developing the policy's procedures and managing and evaluating the staff who implement them. The Director works closely and directly with high level UC Santa Cruz administrators (e.g., College Provosts, Deans, Associate and Assistant Deans, Department Chairs), Academic Senate Leadership, Campus Counsel, the Teaching and Learning Center, as well as faculty and staff.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
Budgeted Salary: $111,150 - $131,000/annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience. Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. JOB DUTIES
50% - Program Management
Establishes and manages the Academic Integrity Office, charged with implementing UC and UC Santa Cruz's student academic conduct policies and regulations, as well as providing academic integrity training to the campus community. Hires and supervises professional, administrative and student staff who execute the charge. Serves as the campus key academic integrity officer for high-level UC employees such as College Provosts, Deans, Associate and Assistant Deans; Department Chairs; Academic Senate Leadership; and Campus Counsel. Assesses the implications of sensitive or controversial academic integrity issues as they arise, and initiates and facilitates the necessary communication or meetings to resolve.
Leads a process of continuous improvement to resolve complex operational issues. Deploys technology to solve operational issues, and improve service to students and programs. Determines the resources needed to meet the goals and objectives of the program, taking into account budget allocation, FTE, and other factors. Responsible for managing the resources assigned to the AI Office to ensure programs and activities fulfill the unit's mission. Directs and manages expenditures and budget. Provides recommendations, explanations, and justifications for expenditures and budget.
Interfaces with academic departments and other constituents to evaluate effectiveness of programs, and modifies programs accordingly. Develops and implements a formal annual evaluation and needs assessment of the AI Office and services provided. Manages a robust process to collect and analyze data to evaluate the impact of programs and services. Using knowledge of program evaluation, evaluates services and devises adjustments.
20% - Policy & Compliance
Serves as the principal advisor to the campus administration on matters of policy, legislation and regulations related to academic integrity. Reviews and comments on proposed university and campus policies involving academic integrity issues. Provides expert direction to the campus in developing policies that apply in all instructional and instructional support settings. Provides leadership to and participates in campus-wide committees that impact academic integrity policies, procedures, and programs. Participates in international and national groups whose purpose includes advising governmental and educational organizations on policies and practices related to academic integrity.
Ensures that academic integrity policies and procedures meet best practices and legal requirements. Ensures that academic integrity policies, procedures and practices are in compliance with campus security and confidentiality policies and standards including data privacy. Articulates new or emerging academic integrity issues to the campus community, and actively engages administrators or departments in addressing them. Encourages campus administrators and departments to explore academic integrity issues that have not been adequately addressed or which may require additional review, and develops consensus and commitment throughout the campus community when initiating new services and programs.
20% - Strategic Planning
Determines strategy, sets the short term goals and objectives. Provides leadership and vision for a broad spectrum of academic and co-curricular services to enhance academic integrity on campus. Has full responsibility for short- and long-term program planning, establishing program priorities, and new services. Manages programs and services in an environment of competing interests and needs.
Develops solutions to complex situations, monitors trends, determines when new programs are needed, and determines appropriate technologies to deliver services. Oversees the collection and analysis, and reporting of data each year to evaluate the impact of services. Submits reports annually to Academic Senate and campus administrators as required. Participates in strategic planning, policy and procedure development, and provides expertise to the campus and the extended community on compliance with policy and the law.
10% - Stakeholder Relationships
Serves as the chief campus expert on issues related to academic integrity. As appropriate and in collaboration with Campus Counsel and University Communications and Public Affairs, communicates with University, State, Federal and members of the public on academic integrity.
Communicates specialized knowledge to the campus administration as well as academic departments and administrative units.
Represents UC San Cruz to the UCOP on academic issues and related policies and program issues. Maintains a strong and positive working relationship with Campus and Office of the President counsel.
Markets program to students, academic departments, and the organization. Oversees the marketing of academic integrity training, education and programs to the entire campus. Provides pedagogical and curricular training and consultations to faculty who seek to adjust their teaching to enhance academic integrity.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in a related area, or equivalent experience or training in Academic Integrity required.
Broad working knowledge of research and literature on academic integrity and the ability to apply that knowledge to promote and support a culture of integrity.
Proven ability to lead and develop staff members. Demonstrated skill in supervision including the selection, training, supervision, evaluation, and professional development of staff and working knowledge of corrective action procedures. Demonstrated ability to motivate staff and maintain a positive working environment.
Broad knowledge in designing and implementing learning and pedagogical models.
Broad knowledge of academic curricula.
Strong communication skills, to communicate effectively in a diverse environment at all levels, with tact and diplomacy in order to achieve program and campus goals.
Strong ability to build and maintain relationships with a broad range of staff and members of the community.
Proven skills in program and project management, including short- and long-range planning, facilitation, and collaboration in support of institutional priorities, strategies, and vision.
Broad knowledge in the design, implementation, and evaluation of training and development programs for faculty, staff and students that meet the needs of a diverse population.
Proven skills in sound strategic thinking, problem solving and consulting skills in guiding the organization toward workable strategies and solutions.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Master's degree and at least four years full-time professional experience working in academic integrity, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
