The Division of Neurology and Developmental Neurosciences at Texas Children’s Hospital is looking for  a genetic counselor for their division. The counselor will provide genetic counseling services to patients and their families for or a wide variety of conditions that affect brain development and function as well as neuromuscular disorders. These conditions include but are not limited to genetic forms of epilepsy, movement disorders, Duchenne muscular dystrophy and spinal muscular atrophy. The counselor will also be involved in working as a liaison with the Department of Health and Human Services for newborn screening for X-ALD and SMA. The counselor will report directly to a Pediatric Neurogeneticist who is board certified in medical genetics, child neurology and neurodevelopmental disabilities within the Division of Neurology and Developmental Neuroscience. The counselor will also attend meetings and engage with faculty in the Department of Human and Molecular Genetics at Baylor College of Medicine. Additional roles include assisting with teaching, instruction, and clinical supervision within the Baylor College of Medicine Genetic Counseling program.

Job Duties

Counsels patients with indications of genetic risks in pregnancy.
Conducts preliminary research such as; family and patient medical histories, coordination and follow-up of genetic testing, and review of patient referrals. Drafts and sends letter to patients summarizing the genetic counseling session. Letters are sent to the patient and referring physician. Answers patient calls and assesses need for services.
In some cases, refers clients to appropriate agencies and physicians.
Performs other job related duties as assigned.
